of all the professions I expected to have their own symbols in unicode, I never would have guessed Dentistry.

U+23BE Dentistry Symbol Light Vertical and Top Right
through
U+23CC Dentistry Symbol Light Vertical and Bottom Left

I may have slightly slashdotted the site
removed the link to a search on a unicode site
"Oh heck! prods down! What happened?!"
"We've had a 5000% increase in hits to our search endpoint!"
"what the heck? Where are they coming from? An AI crawller going mad?"
"Oh no! Worse! @foone posted a link! It's thousands of real nerds"
@foone slightly
@cadey yeah in retrospect having a bunch of mastodon instances automatically query a fulltext search results page was PROBABLY a mistake
@foone @cadey is this traffic caused by users all interacting with the link? Or the mere inclusion of the link causes fedi to try to crawl it something? (And when other instances are notified of the status too?)
@colinstu @foone @cadey Whenever you post a link to a site, every instance that the post federates to will try to fetch preview data from the link, so you can expect something like 300-500 requests within a few seconds, which seems to be quite a burden for many sites.
@colinstu @foone @cadey the latter; I have to filter out *so* much fedi noise every time I look at my access logs. even just updating my profile triggers a rescrape on thousands of instances
@astraleureka @foone @cadey I'm curious why the remote instances have to reach out directly, instead of relying upon the source instance to provide card link fetching/preview / act as a proxy or something.
@colinstu @foone @cadey that would require trusting the source instance, which seems like a Really Bad Idea
Even as someone who doesn't care for Star Trek, it still pisses me off that we got *this* before the Klingon alphabet in Unicode.
@foone

@foone This made me go look through the "Miscellaneous Technical Block" and for some reason the existence of

⍻ "NOT CHECK MARK"

made me laugh out loud

why
why would you need this

@pence @foone There should be a "NOT A PIPE" one as well
@pence seemingly because of ISO 2047 "Information processing – Graphical representations for the control characters of the 7-bit coded character set". I didn't check too deeply, but it is a visual representation of NAK
