Straight up is abelism that auto-generated captions censor naughty words. People who need them are (often) still adults that don't need naughty words blocked for them.
@estrogenandspite yeah the idea of censoring captions is ridiculous, especially if the source material isn’t censored
agreed! I wanna read some fuckin' cuss words, dammit!!
iy would guess it's a precaution in case it "mishears" and erroneously turns a non-swear word into a swear word? especially in the past when automatic captions weren't as accurate as they are now. that could easily be a setting, though, or if it knows you're an adult it could automatically switch to an uncensored subtiytle track
@iykury it's true that's probably the reason for it; however that doesn't make it okay. If it's a setting it should be something you turn on if you want the censoring, not something you turn off.

@estrogenandspite there's also some tik tok and reel kinda things where you literally can't understand them unless you have volume on because it replaces the words in the captions with things that are less likely to be blocked by the algorithm. But they still use the actual word when you have the volume on???

Made it hella confusing when watching on mute

@emairi that's not an auto-generating fault. That's something the creators are doing and it absolutely pisses me off too. It's a different kind of problem that is very much related and is still ableist.
@estrogenandspite gross they are intentionally doing it? Even worse
@estrogenandspite @emairi Don't know if I would call it ableist - I'm more inclined to use words like "bloody annoying", "stupid" or "assholes". Does it impact people with hearing problems more? Yes. Does it impact and annoy me? Also yes. The only thing I can do is just not watch that stuff, which I probably shouldn't do in the first place (I listen to idiots at work, but they pay me for that, I refuse to do so in my spare time).
@estrogenandspite this annoys me. if the curse words are bleeped, then fair enough. but if they said fuck and the captions say "f***", that's just purile.
@estrogenandspite what would adulthood have to do with anything, if children who dont need the subs can hear the naughty word then children who do need them can too

@Transbian_Arsonists3 that's absolutely fair and a good point. I don't have a follow-up. I was just thinking about the fact that adults don't need naughty words censored but you're right that if children can hear it then other children who are reading should be able to hear it too.
@estrogenandspite
And if they aren't adults, then it's still not the vendor's place to decide whether or not they want to hear naughty words!
@estrogenandspite @ireneista it's also likely ADA-noncompliant (certainly FCC-noncompliant in broadcast)
@estrogenandspite OTOH, the least ableist censorship I've seen was something with a sign language interpreter. They said fuck, the broadcaster beeped it, censored the captions, and put a black square over the interpreter
@estrogenandspite
On YouTube I assumed users were doing that as a way to avoid autogeneration detecting the swears and getting demonetized, but recently I saw YouTube's autogenerator do it too, so idk.
