That's a five-star title right there. A nice little noir-infused British crime thriller that proves Hammer could occasionally make a non-horror hit. My ★★★½ review of Hell Is a City (1960) on Letterboxd: https://boxd.it/dAL1qB #HellIsACity #Hammer #NoirMovies
A ★★★½ review of Hell Is a City (1960)

My familiarity and love for noir is largely settled around the American flavor. I've seen a smattering of the genre from other countries, but that's still a hole in my viewing I need to fill. Hell Is a City is a bit snappier than I expect from my noir, but it's also a lot of fun. I shouldn't be surprised by that though; this is directed by Val Guest after all. The famed Hammer director adds energy and snap to this tale of a police inspector on the hunt for a ruthless escaped criminal. There's just enough of sauce in

Wait, I’m confused. Hell is a City, but hell is other people? So that means people are a city, but soylent green is people. So Hell is soylent green, the roads to which are paved with good intentions. This road may also be a highway to hell, and therefore to the danger zone. Where does the world being a vampire come into things? If it’s a wonderful world, are vampires wonderful? Do they stop being made of city when they become a vampire?
