Q4: If you are struggling with a make, what do you do to over come it? #MakersHour

Sometimes I'll just walk away for a bit, and that helps. Other times, I might ask @Maker_of_Things for advice or help, or if it's really a problem, just quit it.

@MakersHour I've usually got a few projects going at once, so if it's just a case of being a bit tired or not in the right headspace there's always something simpler I can switch to for a break.

But if I'm struggling with actually learning to do a new thing, sheer stubborn persistence usually does the trick! Sometimes I'll also film the struggle, because making videos means people assume you're an expert and it's good to burst that bubble every now and then 😁

A4 walk away. Go have a drink, maybe some food. Sometimes even just go home and come back another day. This happened on my kerfing plane build, I wrote about it on the blog post about the project.

Q4: If you are struggling with a make, what do you do to over come it?

A4: What *do* I do or what *should* I do?

What I should do is take a breath, walk away for a bit and have a cup of tea.

What I actually do is get frustrated, which leads me to rush into something stupid or get too heavy handed with it.

@MakersHour

@MakersHour Hm, sometimes i just need a break and try again. Sometimes I'll change the project into something different that does work, and sometimes I just abandon it altogether, take it apart and use the materials for something else.

@MakersHour Q4 A4 Struggling with a make? Sometimes I come back to It later if the issue is just needing a chunk of time to concentrate on it (setting up to cut large fabric pieces or machine sewing). Sometimes I can ask for consultation on technique or design or tint and tone. My hexagon pieced pouch had that sort of consultation from the household.

Sometimes I make another of the item.

Sometimes I rip out a seam or stitch.

Sometimes I make an expedient choice and revisit it or not.

@MakersHour #MakersHour A4: I usually do something else for a while, and come back when I'm ready.

I usually know I'm ready when I want to do that first project to procrastinate on something else.

@MakersHour Revisit it after a good nights sleep is usually the most effective approach. I try to never do anything that cannot easily be reversed or undone after 10pm. #MakersHour
@drfootleg @MakersHour Not making per se but bicycle maintenance earlier this week. Had a problem, slept on it, and the solution came to me.

10pm is a house rule here too! Power tools, rm -rf, Really Emotional Emails... sleep on it first.

@MakersHour Q4: stuck on a make? what do?

A4: Like many others, my most common approach is to take a break.

That alone typically helps a lot. It has also lead to some essentially abandoned projects - even if I've figured out how to overcome the issue. If I'm away too long, restoring momentum can be hard.

Sometimes I ask others for help / ideas. I probably should do that more, but I've learned to not ask for help unless REALLY stuck, and its hard to deprogram that behavior.
