Q2: Were you a maker as a child? If so, what? #MakersHour

@MakersHour My first proper memory is of us moving house when I was two. I spent all of moving day sitting in the new kitchen out of everyone's way, making a Christmas card with cotton wool snowmen on.

When I got older origami became the thing, and then Meccano was an obsession for quite a few years. We had a neighbour who made garden gnomes so I got quite into helping with that too! And in my early teens took up sewing although in a very unskilled manner.

p.s. I just did a search and found out Meccano is still a thing, this would be dangerous knowledge if I had any money...

@thegiddystitcher
I know the feeling.

I have been trying not to spend money on Lego and die cast toys of my youth, just because I know they are available.

Q2: Were you a maker as a child? If so, what? #MakersHour

Oh yes. All sorts. Models from old toilet roll tubes and stuff. Lego. Little bits of sewing and embroidery. Hand drawn cards at Christmas for friends and family. Mum used to get us to draw designs, and then she'd photocopy them at work for us to colour in. TBH, the colouring in got a bit tedious....

@suearcher @MakersHour Oh I loved colouring in! I used to colour in, you know that old wallpaper with like a foam texture? I would colour in the back of that, filling in the patterns. Happy memory unlocked 😁

@thegiddystitcher @MakersHour

Oh, that does sound fun!

I think it was just colouring in the same design over and over that stopped being fun after a while. I say over and over, it was maybe 4 or 5 times, but when you're little and you've drawn a Christmas tree design, it feels like a lot of green to colour in...

@MakersHour #MakersHour A2: I took up crocheting briefly as a kid, and wrote and illustrated some stories for the Young Authors contest

In sixth grade, someone gave me a friendship bracelet kit for my birthday, and that was my special interest until I picked up crochet again in high school (and knitting at uni). I even sold bracelets at a couple of neighborhood garage sale days.

@WizardOfDocs @MakersHour Omg I forgot about those friendship bracelets. They were so cool!
@thegiddystitcher @MakersHour I hear about young women making friendship bracelets these days, and it's always beads on a string. The nice ones made of knots feel like a lost art.
Though I did just pick up some lovely embroidery floss destash from a friend...
@WizardOfDocs @MakersHour Funny you mention it, some Vinted seller sent me a SACK of floss along with the cross stitch fabric I bought from her...

@thegiddystitcher @WizardOfDocs @MakersHour

I used to make a lot of this type of thing and I still have an entire bag filled with different colours of embroidery floss for making them.

@MakersHour not really. No more than the average kid anyway. Though for about a week when i was 10 I fancied myself a comic artist. That career spluttered to an end when I realized that I couldn't draw all that well, and couldn't be arsed to put in the wotk to get better at it. So I went back to just reading (which took up about 85% of my free time).

Q2: Were you a maker as a child? If so, what?

A2: I had Lego and meccano, so yes! One of the few classes I enjoyed at school was design and technology, doing woodwork and metalwork. I remember making a hacksaw, no idea what happened to it!

@MakersHour

@MakersHour

A2 yes. Lots, mostly wood, but also ceramics, textiles, electronics, and plastic. In fact my "design and technology" (what school called wood work, metalworking, cooking, and sewing). Report one year said "give her a couple of peices of 2x4, and she'll build anything".

#MakersHour

@quixoticgeek
That is a pretty good compliment, especially from a school report.

@MakersHour Q2 A2 Maker as a child? In small packaged ways, polystyrene models and glue. More a collector perhaps? Rocks and coins. My father was more the maker, a bicyclist, photographer with darkroom, who made us an A-Frame playhouse covered with long eucalyptus branches dropped from the grove by the University of California San Diego.

I got into cooking because I had allergies which needed modifications to avoid eggs and milk.

I did a little sewing in middle grades, but most of my making is after moving out on my own.

#MakersHour

@MakersHour #MakersHour I am still a childish #Maker if that counts?

@drfootleg
We all should much more child like than we are allowed to be.
I think the world would be a happier place for it.

@MakersHour Q2: Were you a maker as a child? If so, what? #MakersHour Yes! I made a lot: drawing, lego, building hideouts in the woods, carving, sewing, soldering, a little coding, knitting, clay, the lot. Our parents made all sorts of things too, and taught us in the process ❤️

@MakersHour Q2 Maker as a child?

A2: Absolutely! Maybe it was a result of Legos. I was recently discussing with my partner that perhaps Lego Technics are why I seem to more intuitively understand the mechanics of a camera she was trying to repair.

Even playing with electronics started in elementary school with kits like https://www.pololu.com/product/1657

The "Astable Multivibrator" (LED blinker) was my favorite circuit in elementary school.

Pololu - Elenco 200-In-One Electronic Project Lab

Learn electronics with the Elenco 200-In-One Electronic Project Lab! This kit includes everything you need to get started building your own electronic circuits. Components such as resistors, capacitors, LEDs, ICs and more are securely attached to the electronic lab so you can spend less time searching for components and more time learning how to build that next circuit! This kit requires six AA batteries (not included).

@MakersHour I think of it more as creative problem solving. I had lego bricks of course, and other building toys, I tried to make some model cars, etc, always drawing and doing art, learned how to fix cars and whatever else around the house broke because we didn't have money to pay someone else, etc. Learned to crochet but didn't stick with that, sewing, cooking. It's an attitude.
