JFCONAPOGOSTICK

if am in nyc, why would i have to comply with a stupid California law? I DON’T. there is a reason CA lawyers cannot practice in NY state. there is no correspondence with their state bars.

so how is systemd even going to work this out? am i going to be geolocated? this doesn't make sense at all from a legislative POV ―unless you are being palm-greased by Gates/Zuckerberg dark money, out to kill FLOSS & democracy.

FLOSS devs need a National Lawyers Guild corps of tech lawyers.

@blogdiva I'm still surprised it passed the California state legislature unanimously. Not even token resistance to fascism.

There's also a history of corporations voluntarily complying, nationally, with whichever US state has the most oppressive laws. The classic example is Texas with textbooks.

@foolishowl @blogdiva That it passed unanimously is distressing. I think legislators are so ignorant that they don't even recognize this as fascism.

@blogdiva

The nice thing is that so far all of those laws are on the honor system.

Users need to provide a birth date but there are no penalties for putting whatever date or for the OS not verifying it.

However we definitely need to fight back hard before those things do make it in, check out this horseshit if you haven't seen it yet:
https://assembly.state.ny.us/leg/?default_fld=&bn=S08102&term=2025&Summary=Y&Actions=Y&Text=Y&Committee%26nbspVotes=Y&Floor%26nbspVotes=Y

@gbargoud @blogdiva I believe that with the CA law, you don’t even need a birthdate, just current age. So fairly minimally invasive, but also fairly minimally useful.

But this is all very stupid. If we need to prove our age to be able to use a computer that might theoretically allow us to see age inappropriate material, then we should need the same assurances to leave our home, turn on a TV, or open our eyes in an uncontrolled environment.

@josh0 @blogdiva

It's also giving everyone additional hoops to jump through without actually punishing the bad actors themselves who are taking advantage of children's developing brains to expose them to extremely addictive dark patterns early in life.

Like instead of making things suck for all users, target the bad guys.

@gbargoud @blogdiva Good grief, the New York bill is bonkers. And it's a Gounardes special---he has been on a Helen Lovejoy kick for years now, and (so I have heard) dismisses his own constituents as "Big Tech shills" when they complain.
@blogdiva from what I've heard, the law itself is very unclear and the penalties for non-compliance are immense. Colorado is already putting a similar law through its legislature, so everyone is panicking and expecting this to be the new normal

@blogdiva

There's a worse age verification law bouncing around in New York.

I'd recommend protesting it before it passes.

@blogdiva Why are you running the California fork of systemd on your New York computers?
@blogdiva First LennartOS adds LLM slop, and now they comply in advance with bullshit laws… They jumped the shark long ago, when they started stuffing feature after feature into systemd, but ho boy do we need to replace a lot of oss “leadership” with principled people who actually have a spine -.-
@blogdiva if I may address this on a technical level: fuck these bootlicking shitstains and the clown car they showed up in.

@blogdiva That's the same systemd accepting "AI" PRs, correct?

Fuck that for a game of soldiers, OpenRC here I come.

systemd 260 Released: mstack, SysV Service Scripts Removed & AI Agents Documentation

Systemd 260 was just released as the newest stable version of this widely-used Linux init system and service manager

@brad @blogdiva I made the mistake of reading the commit discussion.
@EdCates @blogdiva Burn it all down, salt the earth around it, let us never speak of it again.
