Just for the cringe, I checked the gas price yesterday at the place I usually buy at. The cost of regular is up 75 cents per gallon, from 2.749 to 3.499 (27%).

My home heating oil has gone up even more. I did a prepaid purchase last fall at 3.27/gal. It’s now 5.37, a 64% increase. I still have about a 100 gals of the prepay, but since it’s been colder than expected this fall/winter, I’ll need to do another top off to get me thru to next fall.

My wallet says ouch

@DeltaWye @FurryBeta unlike petroleum, the data evidence I've seen inclines me to believe most of the sources saying we still have ample NG reserves in the ground to last us at least another 20-50 years (accounting for a two to fourfold increase in demand). Prices will climb as other fuels do because people need to get the energy from somewhere, but it's unlikely to be a major source of attrition, at least not in North America. Which is good: that's what makes the fertilizer that grows our food.

@earthshine @DeltaWye I haven’t looked it up recently, but yeah, we’ve got plenty of of natural gas and oil reserves.

IIRC, unfortunately, most of our oil isn’t really good for refining into gasoline and no. 2 oil/diesel, and our natural gas boom was mainly due to fracking technology, which isn’t a great way to drill for gas

@FurryBeta @DeltaWye I was gonna correct you but yes, as long as we're counting oil we can't reasonably get to and extract for less than the amount of energy we would gain from it, sure, we *do* have plenty of oil left in the ground... but that extraction cost to separate kerogen from shale, added to the difficulty in reaching ever deeper deposits means at some point it becomes non viable, and at our currently still exponentially growing burn rate, that's soon.
