Remember that the same people say the same thing about AI
@thomasfuchs Always makes me laugh when people have banking in these lists. They're still using COBOL in places! 😄
@denny @thomasfuchs why tf do I need a virtual avatar to check my fucking bank balance. It only takes a few bytes (assuming theres some fucking json in there for no good reason) to show me `$27.14`)

@thomasfuchs

Typical Hockeystick-Marketing-Bullshit.

@thomasfuchs Unfortunately, AI has already demonstrated remarkable propensity to create job disruption and mass unemployment

@threatresearch @thomasfuchs

That’s not AI. That’s your boss hiding behind AI.

Did AI kill 160 schoolgirls in Iran? US investigation reveals SHOCKING details, says AI may have identified school as ‘legitimate’ target due to…

The Shajareh Tayebeh Girls School in Minab city was among the first locations targeted in the joint US-Israeli strikes across Iran.

I heard the school building had been a garrison years ago, but has undergone quite some change and construction work since then.

I'd guess that chronological ordering is too far from the LLlM's principle of probabilistic guessing. Blind and reckless use of the wrong tool. Regardless of novelty admiration: if you bring your shiny new rotary tiller to surgery, there will be blood on the wall.

@thomasfuchs hey remember when companies were racing to build virtual campuses and have virtual TED talks in SecondLife?

How shortlived was _THAT_?

@thomasfuchs can’t argue with McKinsey, they’re always right.
@thomasfuchs Itanium sales forecast, for comparison.
@dascandy @thomasfuchs someone thought selling 200m cybertrucks could happen lol
@thomasfuchs Note that this time they invested a lot more than in the "metaverse".
@thomasfuchs Ha! That’s awesome! Do you know what year that was published?
@danyork @thomasfuchs McKinsey's "Value creation in the metaverse" is from November 2022. I'd guess this is a companion chart from that

@thomasfuchs Under Enterprise Use Cases -

Sanitary evacuation technologies - HIGH

@thomasfuchs ok, but AI is already 100x more useful in a day than the metaverse was ever
@thomasfuchs VR *banking* is highly likely???
@groxx these consultants have their heads so far up their own asses that they can see light again
@thomasfuchs FYI, if my family had virtual access to community, entertainment, and employment, this might actually play out. Now, hard drives are expensive, jobs are being cut "due to AI [diversity/worker power]", and the programs I depend upon to get by are under attack. So I still need VR to be a reality, but only after the Real reality gets fixed. 🥺
@thomasfuchs Great reminder that hype is just hype.
@thomasfuchs the metaverse was always just stupid. AI has real potential, it is currently very overhyped. But there will be significant business-use-cases in the future. Impact on employment is still a big question.
@thomasfuchs and all the while, VRChat has been connecting (predominantly) furries since 2015 and will continue on. But with no hype, and no "impact potential".
@thomasfuchs LLMs are way more useful than the metaverse ever was but the metaverse had a much more straightforward path to monetization... it's still not clear if people are going to be willing to path for what the LLMs actually cost given that all vendors are subsidizing the crap out of them with venture capital and investment right now.
@thomasfuchs it's too bad the early 2020s version of the VR hype cycle took down AR, which did have some interesting use cases outside entertainment.
@thomasfuchs Having flashbacks from the second life era.
