The US is removing Russian sanctions, and now the EU wants to repair the pipeline from Russia to Hungary so Orbán can finance Putin's war.

Political pragmatism is our modern plague.

@randahl In addition to greed and shortsightedness.
@randahl probably repair so Orban won’t Block shit
@randahl nothing new. Let me remind you the time when russia attacked Ukraine and the EU (Germany, Denmark etc) responded by greenlighting another pipeline from russia.
@randahl it can always be destroyed again after the vote 🤷‍♂️
@randahl I disagree with the blaming on political pragmatism, at least how I understand it. To cite a former german chancellor: "I am indeed a pragmatic, but not one without theory and absolutly not one without heart."
I think the problem is not pragmatism targeted at a common cause, but power calculation based on self serving interest.
@randahl I think Putin planned this all along with his pal, Donald... It seems far too convenient otherwise. Americans are all Russians now...

@randahl

What can be repaired and be sabotaged once again.

@randahl

It’s a difficult row to hoe.

Ukraine is facing a financial crisis. The loan from the IMF is not as done a deal as we had hoped.

The Hungarian opposition also does not want energy to be the thing that strengthens Orbán in the upcoming election in mid April.

I wouldn’t want to be in Ursula von der Leyen’s shoes for anything in the world. There are difficult decisions to be made and no clear solutions to these convoluted problems. I think she’s doing a great job.

Also, Trump’s removing oil-related sanctions against Russia will likely generate a far greater contribution to Putin’s war chest than restarting the Druzhba pipeline.
