Strong sugar cravings are more understandable from a tastebud perspective, but why is it that migraines make me crave salt so much I fantasize about eating entire spoonfuls of it?

(For the record, I have never and would never actually eat salt by the spoonful. It simply sounds delicious in that moment).

The human body is odd sometimes.

We need more studies about this.

@lydiaschoch I think it’s a pretty well-known phenomenon; a lot of migraineurs talk about craving McDonalds fries with ice cream or a soft drink during attacks (salt, fat, sugar), and some find that it genuinely helps, but I don’t think anyone really knows why.

(I crave salt during migraines, and indulge those cravings because I also have POTS.)

@lydiaschoch Salt aids with water retention, and it is possible that migraines have a part cause in dehydration. Thus, it may be a self-protection reflex for the body to take in and hold on to more moisture.

Maybe.
