My name is Alexandra. I help build I Write Like, a text editor. Unless one is a tech giant, the chances of people discovering their creation are slim, regardless of how wonderful the creation is. I wanted to change that, so I came to Mastodon.
I’m a writer. I share my short stories and poems, often illustrated with my own art and photography. I'm also interested in #science, #history, and #music.
I’m fairly new here and still learning.

@iwritelike Hello! Do tell more about your new Markdown app. Like, everything.

My initial questions:

- What about privacy?
- Why this app? How did out come about?
- What does it offer that others do not?
- Can it edit locally stored files?
- Can it save .md as well as .txt?

I like that premium is a one-time payment. The serif, sans, and Mono previews are nice, too. FYI I was unable to save to Dropbox because of an API issue on your end.

@ellane Hello Ellane, thank you for the questions! I'll reply in a thread because it won't fit into one post.

About privacy:
It's a web app that works completely client-side in the browser and doesn't send anything to the server: your texts are stored in your browser, not on our servers.

@ellane The history of IWL:
Initially, in 2010, it was just a writing analyzer. 14 years later, we decided to make it into a full-featured Markdown editor to free writers from Word domination :)

How is it different from others:
* Opens in the browser and doesn't need signing in: just navigate and type (no accounts at all).
* Lots of tools for text analysis and transforms.
* Better typewriter mode than the rest.
* You can import and export Word documents.

@ellane
- Can it edit locally stored files?
Yes: directly in desktop Chrome or with our Mac app. In other browsers, you can open and then "download" files to save.

- Can it save .md as well as .txt?
By default, IWL uses the .txt extension, but you can change it to .md or .markdown in settings.

@ellane Regarding the Dropbox issue: could you please send the the error message it showed to [email protected]? Thanks!
