The UK government has backtracked on its position on copyright and AI, stating it must take time to "get this right".

Its original position - allowing AI companies to use copyrighted works to train their models with an opt-out option - received major backlash.

"We have listened," Technology Secretary Liz Kendall said on Wednesday, saying the government no longer favours that approach.

However, the government's position is now unclear, saying it "no longer has a preferred option" for what to do next.

@GossiTheDog Perhaps they could try not listening to AI lobbyists. Could be a start.
@GossiTheDog Why is my girlfriend's picture in this article?

@GossiTheDog

I’m so tired of people who have no clue how a technology works or what it actually does swallowing any and all tech overlord propaganda. At least they stopped short this time.

The government "no longer has a preferred option" while it figures out a new excuse for not giving artists a veto on unwanted use of their work and not requiring artists to be paid for use of their work. Their subservience to the tech bro religion is sickening.

@GossiTheDog

@hamishb @GossiTheDog yeah, could just be a holding position. What they should do is enforce the current law, which would put all LLMs in the dock .
@GossiTheDog why can't they just feed it music theory books? It can only learn by ingesting artists' works? Farcical.

@GossiTheDog

If Dua Lipa is happy, then I'm happy, put her on the cover of every BBC article, why not.

@GossiTheDog So, the government wants to 'balance the interests of ' the thieves and the owners? Theft is theft. I'm sure that if I were to steal something from their houses, they wouldn't be trying to balance my interests with theirs.
