I'm glad that we're finally realizing that we need open source alternatives for the desktop and our apps, but can we also focus on mobile devices now?

It's ridiculous that we basically have two mobile 'options', both with restrictive, proprietary app stores (see also https://keepandroidopen.org/).

If Europe values digital sovereignty, then it needs to invest more in open hardware, open source OS's, and alternative app stores. 🇪🇺

Paging @EC_DIGIT and @EUCommission 🇪🇺

@Gina @EC_DIGIT @EUCommission

There was a public consultation about open source recently - that means there may be an update in the EU open source strategy soon? Probably they are analysing results now…

Commission opens call for evidence on Open-Source Digital Ecosystems

The European Commission has launched a call for evidence on the upcoming European Open Digital Ecosystem Strategy - an initiative that will support EU ambitions to secure technological sovereignty.

Shaping Europe’s digital future
@hpod16 @EC_DIGIT @EUCommission
True, we were one of many many orgs and people that provided input. It should be mentioned that we're very impressed with how proactive the European Commission has been so far when it comes to their open source strategy. But mobile seems a forgotten area (for us at a national level as well). Big fan of @HennaVirkkunen btw!
@Gina @EC_DIGIT it's a pity that @EUCommission is on the wrong side of this fight, trying to get Android locked down as part of its dirty #ChatContol #DigitalOmnibus

Ppl here might want to cast an eye on Democratic:Tech:Fund #dtf

In that matrix space this room (jointly with Co-op Cloud Federation) seems to be the chattiest
https://matrix.to/#/#dtf2026:matrix.org

d:t:f is a pre-launch initiative aimed at cultivating capability in the grassroots, to resist Big Tech thro digital contra-infrastructure(ing) at community level. The Special Sauce will be a novel gift-funding recipe embracing foundations, municipalities and crowdfunding. This is not a pitch for EU 'digital sovereignty' budgets, per se.

Its not so much about new code, more about solid rollout of existing FLOSS. But the focus on the phone, and escaping the duopoly of phone OS, is very underdeveloped.

If this is interesting reply here, so we know to foster the connection? And join us in matrix. There will be a focus, too, at Dweb Camp👀

@Gina Sure seems like we managed to reproduce a similar duopoly as we had on the desktop 🍎 🪟 → 🍎 🤖
@Gina what do you mean by locked down platform please?
@climatemigrant as in, ios and android. Proprietary platforms and app stores managed by Apple and Google.
@Gina I pressed on the link and saw what you meant. Thank you. I am new on Mastodon so not familiar with it yet. I am using a Fairphone, I have stopped using Meta's platforms but I don't know how to get rid of my gmail account which is linked to so many things and first and foremost to the smartphone and google maps. I initially use hotmail though, but still, a gmail account is needed sadly. Are you not using Google and gmail?
@climatemigrant I've been slowly migrating to ProtonMail for years now. Would recommend, it's very user friendly.
@Gina Thank you. Ι have a proton email account but someone recently sent me some articles against Protonmail too. It becomes exhausting. They use riseup but I don't find it user friendly.

Goodbye Meta & big tech, hello Fediverse - Ethos and Empathy

It’s been five years since I uninstalled the application of Facebook from my phone and never installed it ever again, right after I watched the documentary “A social Dilemma”. After a year or so, I deactivated my main Facebook account, and only used an alternative one with no friends, just to be able to administrate […]

Ethos and Empathy

@climatemigrant @Gina It's a bit of a PITA to move all the accounts away from gmail(or any other email account) to a new one, but not impossible. I did the most important accounts first and then whenever I had to use some account I moved it at the same time. Kept the gmail account so nobody can take it over, but haven't used it for anything since switching.

Phone is also a Fairphone (5), but operating system is PostmarketOS (pure Linux, not for the faint of heart) so no big g account required for anything. You could flash e/OS and have android without the google ties.

@jago thank you 🙏. What does it mean to flash them? I am clueless with Linux. I would need private tutorials to switch...

@climatemigrant
Here's a guide for e-mail:

I'm also on /e/OS Fairphone, loving every second of it. Browser tip: Vivaldi

@Gina

Consider, though, that @jolla still relies on a proprietary GUI, and @e_mydata bundles a non-free map application by default (apparently because the alternatives are not mature enough to work as a replacement yet, lacking such things as transit data). Other alternatives such as UBTouch do seem to be more open, but with less technical support.

Does that mean that I have to switch to e/os before that date and after that date Android and Fairphone are "locked" together?

@fenixmaster No, it means that any certified Android, like the one that comes with Fairphone, will not be able to install apps that are not approved by Google. You can still install alternative ROMs or OS's like /e/OS or postmarketOS on any date beyond that.
@bart Thanks for your answer. However, there comes a Time my Fairphone 6 runs another os than Android.
@fenixmaster , in case you need documentation to flash your device: https://doc.e.foundation/devices and feel free to reach out whenever you have questions.
