The most important thing that disability teaches you is that in our culture humans have no value except as a commodity.

Normal people always seem awfully surprised when they find this out.

I read this article on the latimes website yesterday. it's a longer read and well worth it, I think. ☝️
@Fischblog Yup, completely in line with the discussion we had on here this morning, how those affected by post-covid ME/CFS seem surprised that without doing their own advocacy, they will be ignored ... just like all people with disabilities/chronic diseases have been and are ...
@lipow @Fischblog I always wonder why some people 'get it' - even while still having their own advocacy - while others only realize this when their advocacy is gone for good or for a sufficiently long period of time.
@Fischblog
This is common in fascist societies: people with disabilities are treated as a burden.
@Fischblog
Do they only get surprised or do something to make a change?
@nuwagaba2 @Fischblog sometime people are not able to make a change. That’s the hard part about all this, and I guess that’s the hard part to realize: not being able.

@Fischblog

I think normal people are to busy shopping 🛍️ to figure this out before 😒

@Fischblog I really not just think this needs changing but actively work towards said change.

In the US you're not considered valuable as a human being unless you're contributing to the wealth of the 1%. That's why NEETs are despised even if they're doing volunteer work or other stuff that's beneficial. That's why art is not considered a worthwhile contribution, yet rich people get a tax break for donating art to an art museum. It's all about helping the rich get even richer.
