Hi #fediverse. We need to talk about something.

While talking to a colleague about how I recently learned most people have never sat on a cow it came up that she has never sat on a horse. Like, not even once during childhood.

Another colleague admitted they also have never sat on a horse.

My hypothesis is that most people have at one point in their life sat on a horse.

Have you sat on a horse?

Please boost for scientific accuracy.

Yes
No
Poll ends at .

note: the question is not "have your rich parents paid 50.000 of your local currency on gloriously expensive horse lessons and then you went on a skiing holiday". The question is: "have you sat on a horse".

Mini-horse = horse

Pony = horse

Cow = not horse, wrong thread.

And yes, as many people point out: that school-trip to an inner-city petting school where all six yr olds sat on Alfiiiii!! the sturdy mini-horse = yes, I've sat on a horse.

edit: Macro-horse = horse

@Pepijn not sat on a cow or horse but once sat on a camel somewhere in Morocco

@Workshopshed
I was going to ask if a camel* was a horse too, but I suspected that might try @Pepijn's patience to much.

* "Designed by a committee" etc.

@TG_Esq
pretty sure camels are even-toed like cows, while horses are odd-toed, so not even relatives

@Workshopshed @Pepijn

@wolf480pl @TG_Esq @Pepijn except with camels the udder is on the top
@Workshopshed @Pepijn
Horse yes, cow no, but topping with seal = yes 😁 - on land, though, and to immobilise it, not for transport 😆

@Pepijn do camels count?

I've also sat on a chicken but that was an accident and neither of us enjoyed it.

@moz 🤣 did the chicken survive and more important did you? @Pepijn
@rdfhrn @Pepijn yes, we both survived. But there was a lot of upset yelling on the part of the chicken.
@moz We used to have lots of chickens ourselves. So I can well imagine the noise it made. @Pepijn

@Pepijn

How about ‘have you fallen off a horse?’

@Pepijn oh if pony is horse, then yes. But I answered no because I didn’t think ponies are horses (but also according to wiki, they are!)

@Pepijn

Hippopotamus = river horse (not a horse)

Don't try to sit on one, very dangerous

@Pepijn
Does the park's photographer's taxidermied pony count?😆 OK, Nope
@Pepijn I have vivid memories of being on the horse but not why I was on it. I just know Horse happened.
@Pepijn Only Shetland pony. Once.
@Pepijn Only on a pony. So: nope.
@eigengott @Pepijn wikipedia tells me a pony is a type of horse, so it should count! (otherwise i voted wrong '^^)
@Pepijn I did! But in fairness, I grew up in a county with the most horses per land area
@Pepijn My grandfather almost bought me a horse after he learned I had a wonderful time at "ponykamp" in the Summer vacation between class 4 and 5.
My parents had to stop him, because keeping a horse when living in The Hague would have been an expensive challenge!
@leonieke @Pepijn but you'd have a stylish way to go (or ride?) to school!
@kate @Pepijn Hahaha, o yes, but I can just see the principal's eyes if I would have ridden to school!
@Pepijn on a shire horse. Magnificent animal.
@wiletha @Pepijn that's an impressive horse to sit on. Did you get vertigo? 😉
@wiletha ditto, that was a long way off the ground! Also a non-shire local farm horse called Dirty Harry
@Pepijn But I've never sat upon a cow. I missed that poll when it came through.
@Pepijn I grew up on a ranch, and have never sat on a horse. They're scary, especially when you see how insane they can be when they're being broke-in, or scared. My uncle had to have his jaw wired from being thrown off a horse, and the ranch owner's, son's boyfriend died from being thrown off one. They're actually pretty dangerous. Not as dangerous as bison though. I've sat on cows though.
@Pepijn once. I was also kicked by a horse as a child. It was totally my fault.
I still consider them dog food on the hoof though.
@Pepijn Only once though. And neither of us liked it.
@Pepijn Once in my life, and it was one of the happiest and most memorable moments. I'm totally blind, and since I know blind horse riders, I want to learn properly one day.
@menelion @Pepijn I'm also totally blind and did "therapeutic riding" for a few extended periods between age 8 and 22. I loved it and would love to get back into it.
@Starry1086 @Pepijn For me it was a birthday gift. there was (and still is, btw) a park in Kyiv oblast (region) in Ukraine, they have horses, and what is most prominent, knight horses. It's especially good for me because i'm… okay, let's be honest, I'm tall and fat. Not every horse would hold me. I need to find the photo, it does exist.

@Pepijn

I've never sat on a cow - nor did I realise that was a thing. But makes sense, coming to think of it.

I've sat on a horse before and have milked cows. But never rode one.

Filled in the poll and boosted it. Thank you for doing this.

@Pepijn For some reason, a Presbyterian church let me take their youth group horseback riding. Yes, they knew I was an atheist. It was awesome.
@Pepijn No, I’ve never sat on a horse. I’ve only ridden a pony once and ended up with a broken arm from falling off it.
@Broadfork @Pepijn I am pretty sure pony is just type of a horse, so sitting on a pony is sitting on a horse
@Pepijn
Horseriding age 3 - 14. A lot of horse sitting here!
@Pepijn I have also sat on a pig, if that helps your research.

@cunobaros had to scroll quite a bit to find you. Hello fellow pig rider 😅

@Pepijn

@Pepijn I used to take riding lessons lol
@Pepijn sat on a horse for joy ride in childhood, also sat on cow, buffalo and camel
@Pepijn many times!!!
I also did other stuff while ridding horses, like playing Horse-ball.
@Pepijn yep, but a crazy one, wanting to eat all the time and going crazy fast later. Photo taken when calm for a few seconds.
#1jour1souvenir #horses #cheval

@OrangeR @Pepijn Not only have I sat on a horse -- I have a pony who sits on me.

No, really. She sits on my lap. Very carefully. She taught herself because I can reach her rump for scratches best that way.

@Pepijn i would be sick for a week due to allergies. so nope. big nope
@Pepijn I've sat on a ass too.
@Pepijn eh, no, why should I? Nor most of the people I know.

@Pepijn
I have ridden a horse on a few occasions in my life, but never sat on a cow.

Anecdote:

Dad used to tell me that when he was a kid, in 1940s Hong Kong, he had to ride an ox to school. Life was hard then, and that I should really appreciate being able to go to school so easily, and to study hard.

When I was older Mum told me that Dad's story was incomplete.
Dad rode the ox to the station. He then took a train to the town where he had a bicycle chained up. He then rode the bike to school.
Dad's family owned the village farm. The ox normally worked the fields. Few people in his village could afford train fare, or a bicycle to be left in the town, or the school fees!

@Pepijn I'm not that rich.
The only people I know who sat on a horse are rich people.

@Kir @Pepijn

Lots of non-rich country folks keep a horse or two.

@Pepijn Never did, and I’m actually surprised by the current state of the survey: did expect 80% of no, not 80% of yes.

Let’s see how it evolves with a wider demographic.

@Pepijn Okay so now I’m worried.
@Pepijn Also a lion, an elephant, and several large dogs.

@ruemaleficent @Pepijn you’ve sat on a lion??!!

Please elaborate. The Fediverse demands to know.

@slothrop @Pepijn When I was very young, about 54 years ago or so, one of the amusement parks had a very old lion that they'd let kids sit on for photos.

I wouldn't condone it now, the poor beast must have had a miserable life and it's dangerous for the kids regardless of how old the lion is, but my grandparents took me out for the day and it's just something that happened then.
