Thanks to the AD&D DM’s Guide, I know that 16 gnomes can work at once on a ten foot wide tunnel through hard rock and can excavate 480 cubic feet in an 8 hour shift.

I won’t count how many times this has come up in my games.

@deinol I've had actual sappers & counter-mining come up in games, reifying Arneson's dungeon mapping, but it was always Dwarfs or Kobolds, I never even thought of Gnomes for it.

That's why they paid Gary the big cocaine baggies.
