The Trump regime detained Leqaa Kordia, a young woman from New Jersey, for an entire year for using her constitutional right to protest Israel's genocide in Gaza.

At a hearing Friday, the judge said "I’ve heard testimony. I’ve seen thousands of pages of evidence presented by the respondent, and very little evidence presented by the government in any of this."

Monday she was released.

@randahl did she get compensated for the wrongful detainment and being innocently targeted and prosecuted?

@kkarhan @randahl

if she gets a lawyer she can try. it would take awhile but it's worth pursuing. there's even lawyers who would take her pro bono because her case would be legally significant

@benroyce @randahl yeah, cuz I'm used to systems where people at least have recourse against wrongful imprisonment and at least get paid comensation for the time wrongfully in jail...

@kkarhan @randahl

there's lawyers and orgs that do pro bono work because it's a prominent case or legally interesting. for their careers or in service of the community. unfortunately this means if the case isn't legally interesting, or if the case doesn't receive prominent coverage, and they are poor, people can be screwed

@benroyce @kkarhan @randahl

Also, what are the odds that she'll get kidnapped by ICE?

@BillySmith @benroyce @randahl I mean, I know people that already fled the U.S. due to fearing getting forcibly disappeared by the Trump - Regime…

@kkarhan @benroyce @randahl

They've been deliberately targetting people in Minneapolis and Minnesota for helping.

This would be the same M.O.

@kkarhan @benroyce @randahl

It's the same way that the organisers of the Jackson protests all died within 5 years afterwards, either shot by police, lynched, or the curator of the Jackson Museum of Black History, an 80 year-old woman, who was found shot dead in the trunk of a car.

It's been happening for decades already, but we are only hearing about it now, as it's being aimed at white people. :|

@kkarhan @benroyce @randahl Of course the money for this will not come from the people who caused it.
@randahl Her release is meaningful but a year is a year. That's a cost already paid that no court order reverses.
@randahl only released? Not compensated? No one responsible barred from working in government or security ever again?
@ShadSterling the midterm elections are November 3.
@randahl immigration judges are appointed by the attorney general, who is nominated by the president and confirmed by the senate; for the midterms to lead to replacing the current immigration judges, they would have to change Congress so radically that not only would the AG be impeached and removed but only a nominee who would replace them would be confirmed by the senate, a process far too slow to keep up with the rate of new cases. What route do you see from midterms to justice in this case?
