Not feeling great today, so I'm messing around with a couple of quilt ideas instead of actually quilting -

This is the best layout I've come up with yet for the data viz quilt where each block's size represents the number of quilts I finished during the year

I haven't chosen a quilt block yet - suggest a favorite if you've got one! - but it needs to look similar at every size from 5" to 23". Would be nice if the math works and it sews easily at all those sizes, too

#Quilting

I'm also working on my Activism Abecedary. Well, if "working" includes fabric shopping. Found just barely enough of this Windham fabric for the back, so it seemed a destiny purchase (the fabric line is Dream by Jill McDonald)

#Fabric

@inarticulatequilter Oooh I love that!

I just bought some of the new Marcia Derse Plaid(?) prints and some Flora and Form by Essoldo.

@artcollisions those plaids are so scrumptious!

And I came *this close* to buying this color way of Flora and Form Genesis for the Abecedary, then found that alphabet fabric

@artcollisions I may get the aqua anyway, even without a purpose. Could use some wild abandon myself 😉

@artcollisions that color palette is so gorgeous. The rust with the green-blues, I just love it
@inarticulatequilter omg, that whole line is just so good. I had to restrain myself from buying all of it.
@artcollisions do you have plans for any of your purchases?
@inarticulatequilter My first thought is something like a spiral that starts from a same size square in the middle - maybe a different color square for each year.
Or something concentric where the pattern is recognizable at all the sizes, but the larger ones have more colors
@fskornia I was thinking about log cabins, because the center square could be the date, but maybe a spiral would give it a bit more pizazz. Especially if I went scrappy, your idea might work
@inarticulatequilter Whatever you end up doing, it's a very cool idea

@inarticulatequilter This is super cool!

I forecast that you will sew less quilts this year than last year. And barring a pandemic, as in 2020, you will sew very many quilts in 2030, like you did in 2005, 2010, 2015 and 2025.

🤓

@DanielMenjivar I was shocked to see that pattern in the data myself! 🤞🏻 you are right and the pattern bears out

Data visualization is so cool

@inarticulatequilter OOOOOOooooooooooooooooooo! I love this idea!

I like Log Cabin, but also 4-patch, 9-patch, any star block.

For Log Cabin, you *could* start with the same size center and logs, and just make more rounds for the larger sized blocks.

@lisamakesstuff thx! That is what I was thinking about the log cabin, keeping all the logs the same width throughout. But part of me is thinking sawtooth star because it’s the first block I ever sewed? I’m going to flip through my 5000 block book tonight, see if anything catches my eye
@inarticulatequilter If the log cabins don't work out, maybe an X block like this one: https://www.annemariechany.com/blog//2011/12/tutorial-simple-x-block.html?
If you went with white or lighter color fabrics for the Xs you could embroider the year and the number of quilts made.
Tutorial: Simple X Block — AnneMarie Chany Quilt Patterns

This is the block I used to make my Hello Sunshine quilt with Nicey Jane.  It's one I customized with EQ7 to be the size I wanted.  It's simple and elegant when paired with some great fabrics.  Here's a tutorial for the block in case you'd like to try it. Simple X&a

@Rayendal I worry that X might be too simple at the really big sizes? Though it would be easy to piece at every size

I found these in my block book last night - haven’t made a final decision but the pinwheel seems like it might be fun

@inarticulatequilter @Rayendal Ooo that's a nice book! Could you share the title? :-)
@leonieke @Rayendal It’s 5,500 Quilt Block Designs by Maggie Malone. I hope it’s still available, I’ve had it a long time and the pub date is 2003
@inarticulatequilter The easy piecing was what I was thinking -- and also the shape reminded me of those Red Cross fund raising quilts from WWI, when they embroidered the name of the donor on the block, although it was more a cross than an X.
I like the pinwheel shape block. That would be easy to piece in every size, too.

@Rayendal I know about signature quilts in general but I hadn’t heard about WWI Red Cross donor quilts before

If the Xs were wider and string pieced, I could see that working… but I think I might need a break from scrappy (believe it or not)

@inarticulatequilter Gotcha. The only other patchwork I can think that works in any size block is the half square triangle, which would maybe end up chaotic with the different sizes. Take your time and maybe make some test blocks when you're feeling better.
