Éirinn go Brách 🇮🇪

Everyday is a good day to remember that the word "boycott" is the name of a british landlord and general agent of empire so revolting that the people of County Mayo shunned him so hard that his name entered the English language as a prototype

but today is a particularly good day

Charles Boycott - Wikipedia

All too often today, we treat "boycott" as though it means withholding consumption, rather than withholding labor and open displays of hostility.

Bring back the meaning of "get the fuck out of here, you are not wanted"

@SnoopJ And yet look how effective withholding can be, I have seen the most epic meltdowns over things as trivial as a bad yelp review.
@SnoopJ It's why I lowkey hope gas goes up to $10 a gallon. Americans, both the sociopathic CEOs and the sociopathic Ford F150 class, understand only one thing: the almighty dollar. If you want to get anything done in this godforsaken land, you need to hurt someone's wallet.
@theorangetheme things are gonna get weird once GDP growth rolls over and becomes negative. And we're not that far off, now
@SnoopJ I'm sure we will conveniently stop measuring GDP once that happens.
@SnoopJ The people of Minnesota are giving that lesson.
@SnoopJ I always forget that "boycott" comes from a surname, the same as "hooker."
@SnoopJ Great story to remember what an effective protest looks like

@SnoopJ

You and my best friend would get along. They're also a japanophile, introduced me to Kneecap, and who got me to start learning Irish. It's been a great time.

@rusty__shackleford I've considered picking up a bit of the language but never made much of an attempt. I think a bit of pissing around on duolingo back in the bad old days and that's it, aside from the stereotypical phrases a member of the diaspora might hold in their head :P
@rusty__shackleford I did name the current iteration at work "Céad Míle Tickets" though
