It used to be a delay loop, tuned for a 80286 CPU.
With each successive CPU release it got faster and faster. 80386 was a little faster. 80486 was a lot faster… Pentium 133MHz quite brisk.
I recall my father finishing a game on his (then new) dual Pentium PRO 200MHz machine running Windows NT 4.0… the animation was finished in 3 seconds flat.
5 years later, he got a new machine, dual Pentium III 1GHz with Windows 2000. We retried the experiment, then watched as the cards fell as sedately as @catsalad's video… they had fixed the delay loop for newer CPUs.
I was greatly disappointed.
