"On the 22nd of February, the hungarian parliament accepted a modification of the child protection act. It basically makes it impossible to organise the Budapest Pride. The law is not the first one explicitly targeting queer and trans people, it was preceded by others. Just to mention a couple of them, they banned the „promotion“ of queer sexualities and genders in schools and in the media by connecting it to pedophilia, declared that humans can only be men and women, replaced the term gender with „sex at birth“, and legally erased trans and intersex people to change their gender in official documents.

Day 1 of RMISC. It was mostly good. I participated in most of the Women in Cybersecurity track. Met some new people, learned a couple things re: quantum computing, and then got very pissed off about an allyship panel that was three old white dudes explaining how they were allies because they treat all people the same. . . I walked out when one of the guys said “woke probably swung too far left when it became possible to ruin careers by making false accusations of impropriety to HR”. . .
I didn’t have the guts to confront in that room. It was sad because it made a safe room feel unsafe. And because it diminished my respect for the person who chose to make that panel part of the track.
Then I ran into Rick Howard and chatted for a bit and got to listen to @briankrebs give a wonderful keynote with a much more honest and grounded tone than we are likely to see from the rest of the speakers this week. . .
Anyway, the day I was looking forward to most of the conference is over now. Only slightly marred by being reminded that some folks still see the bare minimum as worth epitomizing. 🤷🏻♀️ two more days of plucking nuggets of value from some presenters and making connections.
Oh and also, swag.
It's a weird Tuesday. Graduation was this past Saturday. All the circumstances were pompped. Hats were tossed. 8 separate live streams (11 if you include the Friday Graduations for the online schools and whatnot) flawlessly executed by a dedicated team of IT professionals. I had nothing to do with that part. I just watched and listened.
Then the holiday weekend. The dashboards are quiet. Too quite? Not really. The correct quiet for the current status of the district. It will pick back up soon enough. . .
And then tomorrow (and the rest of the week) is RMISC.
Makes it feel like I should be doing a lot of work today, but also like I can't get too into anything that might span more than one day. It's a Monday-Friday Tuesday. . .
Tomorrow afternoon I get to listen to @briankrebs give a keynote. The rest of the week I'll see if I can glean some nuggets of wisdom, maybe learn a thing, or hear a perspective I've not considered before.
It's hard for me to get hyped about conferences. Especially with the AI cheer teams leading every session.
They say it's about the networking. But I think it's really about the swag.
I do need more socks. . .
