Have a rummage around in the big box for this week's edition of #ThePlaylist, where our theme is:

Toys & Games

So all of the suggestions this week have been formatted to play on one of those Fisher Price 'My First Record Players'. Two hours of gentle tinkling that vaguely reminds you of Top Pop Tunes.

Or not.

NEXT WEEK ON #ThePlaylist the theme will be:

Accents

This one has been bubbling about in my branes for a few months, so I'm interested to see if people come at it from the same direction as me.

Fling your suggestions this way with #ThePlaylistSuggestion, and together we'll be build a radio show the direction of which I have no way of predicting.

// https://stream.djdarren.site // Monday 19:00-21:00 UK //
// https://djdarren.site/archive/podcast/ //

@DJDarren my #hiphop #thePlaylistSuggestion for the theme Accents is A Tribe Called Quest’s beautiful tribute to the immigrant, Luck of Lucien, where at some point you can hear the subject of the song, their French friend Lucien, in the background exclaim “I’m sexy and I’m French, everybody love my accent!”
@DJDarren Lucien is one of the unsung heroes of the Native Tongues, by the way. He was there couchsurfing in the studio while all those classic early Tribe, Jungle Brothers, De La Soul albums were recorded, regularly contributing ad libs and even an occasional verse, contributed production to The Beatnuts’ debut - and later, having returned to France, produced some of Suprême NTM’s best tracks. #hiphop
@slevelt @DJDarren Hey yo Tip what's wrong with snails?

@DJDarren #ThePlaylistSuggestion

I’ll be back with some more later, I’m sure, but I can’t ignore my immediate reaction:

🎤 Quakers feat. Deed - Outlaw

…because West Country over West Coast, any day.

@DJDarren #ThePlaylistSuggestion

Finally refined some thoughts from many possibilities.

Just to be entirely predictable, for instance: How about Neneh Cherry (who is Swedish but also rather multi-national), and her London cries of 'what is he liiike? YanawatImean?'

Obviously famous in Buffalo Stance, but at the time I didn't know it had first been on a B-side of a track by her husband-to-be:

🎶 Morgan McVey feat. Neneh Cherry - Looking Good Diving With The Wild Bunch

https://youtu.be/igcNxCyErog

- MORGAN McVEY 'Looking Good Diving With The Wild Bunch' NENEH CHERRY

YouTube

@DJDarren #ThePlaylistSuggetsions

...And then I've just got a tour of noticeably UK accents, frankly:

🥤 CRPNTR - Vimto
💃 The Pipettes - It Hurts To See You Dance So Well
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Proclaimers - Throw The 'R' Away
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Catatonia - Mulder & Scully
👑 Lady Leshurr - Queen's Speech 5
🌬️ Admiral Fallow - Easy As Breathing
🦍 Flame Griller - Wuntathought
🎤 Stanley Odd - Where They Lie
🍌 M.I.A. - Banana - Skit

Sorry for so many. I've tried to pick short tunes!

@daveybot @DJDarren

Flame Griller are a great shout

@bigvimto @DJDarren Had to chose between that and ExP's solo track 'From NY to WY', which is a bit more on-subject and has some cracking lines but also it takes too long to end.

...And also the video for Wuntathought is class.

https://youtu.be/fRdRLp8WpZ4

Flame Griller - Wuntathought produced by Kosyne

YouTube

@daveybot @DJDarren

"Me? I'll help you out when your car's broke" is the best and most northern sounding line

@DJDarren #ThePlaylistSuggestion

People singing in their own beautiful accents:

Billy Bragg - The Milkman of Human Kindness
A Lazarus Soul - Black & Amber
Björk - The Anchor Song
John Spillane - Passage West
Hamish Imlach - Cod Liver Oil and the Orange Juice

@ccferrie @DJDarren I absolutely adore that Billy Bragg song. I found a little shop somewhere that, amongst other things, sold milk bottles with “Human Kindness” on the side. Obviously, I bought two.

@DJDarren I'm nothing if not self-centred, so all my suggestions this week are based on my own accent.

Levellers - 100 Years Of Solitude (my original accent before life happened)
Foy Vance - Closed Hand, Full Of Friends (Northern Irish: Foy's from the Other Bangor)
Duke Special - Freewheel (Northern Irish: from Lisburn! and I think these lyrics ONLY rhyme in this accent)

No k-pop this week because it would be too easy. Papa Steph sent me a list of about twenty songs, as is his wont, so from that I have selected one. Don't feel as if you must include him every week, you can count us as one person if you like. We're very similar, except he's a bit taller and quite a lot older and has far worse tattoos. ANYWAY:

Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel - Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me)

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren My dad has insisted that for St Patrick’s Day I also suggest:

The Dubliners - McAlpine’s Fusiliers

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@astronomerritt @DJDarren I nearly suggested Duke Special for that reason so +1 on that.

@DJDarren #ThePlaylistSuggestion A few thoughts, none of which are taking the orthographical route, but perhaps I'll think more on that.

Lord Kitchener - London is the Place for Me
(because it is very much a song of immigration - Kitch performed it aboard the Windrush at Tilbury dock, there's a video of it on youtube - and because accent is important in the story of Caribbean migration to Britain)

Charlotte Agigéry & Bolis Pupul - Blenda
(a song which discusses accents, again in the context of migration)

And three songs in which, rather more straightforwardly, English regional accents are very much to the fore and I find it difficult to imagine these songs performed by people without strong accents:

Stick in the Wheel - A Thousand Pokes

Alex Glasgow - Keep Your Feet Still, Geordie Hinny

The Unthanks - Blue Bleezin' Blind Drunk
(particularly the version from the album The Unthanks with Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band)

@RolloTreadway @DJDarren great choices! That Unthanks song in particular is brilliant.

@DJDarren Can I also add to this, quick thought, on the subject of songs where a particular regional accent is essential:

Public Service Broadcasting - They Gave Me a Lamp
#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren

- American English by Idlewild. In that Scottish accent to boot

- Tilted by Christine and the Queens. French.

- Linger by the Cranberries. Irish.

- Do I Wanna Know by Arctic Monkeys. Broad Sheffield

- Next by The Sensational Alex Harvey Band. The most Scottish man ever to live

Dr Mrs Caitlin Swisslet is right in with Where Do You Go To My Lovely by Peter Sarstedt. It’s very Gallic and all that, but his Scandinavian accent keeps leeking out. Legsh.

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren

Or….

Anything by Motörhead, Spın̈al Tap, Röyksopp, Beyoncé, Michael Bublé….

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren (well, maybe not Bublé!)
@swisslet @DJDarren Good ones. I was going to suggest Motörhead because of the accent.
@KaraLG84 great minds, Kara….

@DJDarren I'm getting all typographical in yo face.

The Umlauts - Boiler Suits and Combat Boots
The Fall - The Acute
And a little cedilla action Poliça - Lay Your Cards Out

YouTube

@DJDarren the theme "accents" is setup for #AusMusic #ThePlaylistSuggestion suggestions!

360 - Boys Like You (feat. Gossling). Besides 360's very Aussie hip hop style you have Gossling's unique voice, shortened words but such a unique (accented?) vocal style.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDGSlfXsRiw

Emma Louise - Jungle. Again, the shortened Australian style wording "dreamin', dreamin'", "speakin'", "feelin'". The upward tone inflection at the end of every line which Aussies have. She's got a beautiful voice, and I had a ball dancing on top of a picnic table at a rave to a dance remix of this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvzu3bKgt5Y

Pez - The Festival Song (feat. 360 & Hailey Cramer). More Aussie hip hop about the experience of going to music festivals, replete with Aussie slang. Bonus sample from Bruce Hornsby (?).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3X38hhr4a4

The Waifs - London Still. Besides the lyrics ("Can you pick up my accent on the phone"), the very West Australian broad accent of the husky vocals. Plus it captures the Australian traveller in London experience.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJFPbdcLbnc

360 - Boys Like You (feat. Gossling)

YouTube

@MrAndrewD

Oh yeah, London Still by the The Waifs totally nails it.

(Have a nostalgic connection to the Waifs - can still remember buying their (then-only) CD from Donna at a festival, sitting in the back of the van they were still living in at the time.)

@DJDarren

@DJDarren Despite being Scottish, my accent is nothing of the sort. So let's have some proper Scottish accents:

Proclaimers - Sunshine On Leith
Runrig - An Ubhal As Airde
Idlewild - Everyone Says You're So Fragile

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren You’ll never guess what country this is from…

It’s in French, sung by a French-Canadian with her Quebecois accent. The track played a lot on English-speaking Canadian radio stations back in the late 80s.

A French friend hates the Quebecois accent and I think he’s a snob.

Mitsou - Bye Bye Mon Cowboy

@DJDarren Can’t not suggest a Newfoundland track.

There are a bunch of recordings of this folk song, but #ThePlaylist listeners would recognize Great Big Sea from shows 55 and 61.

Great Big Sea - I’se the B’y

I'se the B'y

YouTube

@DJDarren and a classic from southern Ontario, by real brothers who definitely weren’t comedians on SCTV and neither of whom ever got shrunk by his kids (or shrunk his own kids? Been a long time since I saw the movie I'm not talking about).

Bob and Doug McKenzie - Take Off

@giflian @DJDarren if you close your eyes you can imagine, rather than a pair of hosers, they're a couple of chill moose, eh? 😅
(I loved their inclusion in Brother Bear - I wouldn't normally use a lazy overused Canadianism, but I think in their case it's almost mandatory)

I didn't realize that Dave Thomas showed up in several other things I've seen - such as the, ironically, "For British Eyes Only" subplot of Arrested Development, and John Cleese's assistant in Rat Race 🤯

@arakin @DJDarren Never watched Brother Bear before. Why does Disney think Canadians are all moose? (See Peter Moosebridge in the Zootopia movies)

@giflian @DJDarren so you're implying you're NOT all moose, huh...

In fairness, there is another animal that comes to mind - and the subject of a patriotic song by The Arrogant Worms:
https://youtu.be/sWX8uWf2LhQ

We Are The Beaver~The Arrogant Worms

YouTube
@DJDarren I should note, the Great Big Sea track is only 2 minutes, and I know you like to squeeze in as many tracks as possible...
@giflian @DJDarren my French wife says that the Quebecois accent is like nails down a blackboard to french ears. French-Canadian tv programmes are often subtitled, apparently!
@swisslet @giflian I imagine it's like southern Englishers trying to understand a conversation between two Glaswegians.

@DJDarren my first #ThePlaylistSuggestion will be a blast from the past, but maybe not the version Brits are used to hearing, as the English language version received more radio time:

Shakira - Suerte

https://youtu.be/a8Rwz6zBJSE

Shakira - Suerte (Whenever, Wherever)

YouTube

@DJDarren

Slang - A House
The Lancashire Toreador - The Oldham Tinkers
Nuevayol - Bad Bunny

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren John Cooper Clarke – Beasley Street

@DJDarren
The Singing Postman - Hev you got a light boy, because my Grandad (from Suffolk) sounded just like this.

Also Wiseguys - Deutsche Bahn, which mocks the announcements that are in English with a heavy German accent on German railways
#theplaylistsuggestion

@DJDarren Why can I only think of colour accents rather than local dialects??
Whiter Shade of Pale keeps pinging around my brain, but is that a colour accent? Then I get Shakin' Stevens Green Door earworming me 😅 #ThePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren 'Don't Die Just Yet' (Arab Strap Remix) - David Holmes

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren one that immediately leaps to mind:

American English - Wax

#ThePlaylistSuggestion #ThePlaylist

Wax - American English

YouTube

@DJDarren

Okay, so I just really like Hamish Hawk’s beautiful voice singing in his own accent, and I’ve had this as an earworm for a few days, and you’ve not played this song yet according to the database, which is practically a crime against internet radio:

Ray Wylie Hubbard - Without Love

@DJDarren Right then, a couple of contrasting ones for you.
Fran Smith - contours. I love the wordplay and that she sings in her local accent.
Billy Connolly - If It Wisnae Fur Yer Wellies. It's Billy Connolly. I don't need to say much else.
#ThePlaylistSuggestion
@DJDarren listening back over our St Patrick's Day brunch this morning because what else would you be listening to on St Patrick's Day but Japanese computer game music and Icelandic art pop.

@DJDarren

Here's a song about how your accent colours people's view of you.

Paul Brady (with Donal Lunny) - Nothing but the same old story.
