I now agree with much of what Anthropic’s CEO (and now others) have been saying for months. The trend line of improvement of AI models is such that more and more companies will come to the same conclusion Block did.

@carnage4life Anthropic is a cult, and dangerous. I like LLMs, but I hate cults. Bill Gurley nails it "warn[ed] that workers who are disengaged or 'sitting idly' in their roles are 'ripe for disruption.'" I also love when Gurley called Travis K a "cancer". It's true.
@codinghorror @carnage4life It's also worth noting, as many already have, that Block is actually just giving itself cover for layoffs, because of business realities. Companies, especially tech companies, have been doing that forever. It's about PR, not AI.

@willhopkins @codinghorror @carnage4life Yup. The 'AI made x% of our headcount redundant' claims should be taken with a grain of salt and only after due diligence. Some of these companies are underperforming, overhired, and have massive AI data capex to cover.

This could be a Rust Belt moment or it could be a 3D printer moment ("no one will need hardware stores!") or any number of infinite possibilities along that spectrum.

That doesn't mean CEOs won't make dumb decisions anyway.
