In the 1970s/80s, we used to hang around rural crossroads at night, taking turns to stand wearing a hooded cloak, carrying a scythe. We'd slowly point a finger at oncoming vehicles. We stopped doing it after a car went in to the ditch. Sorry to all who thought they saw Death.
@fesshole Fucking. Brilliant.
@baiteh @fesshole reminds me of a story from one of the books by James Herriot, telling the story of the Rains Ghost, in truth Triston Farnon, real name Brian Sinclair who played a trick on oncoming cars at night near a Monastery. Brian would dress up as a monk and cars would see what they thought was the ghost of a former occupant of that Monastery. Brian liked to see the cars screaming off into the distance.
@bigpawedbear @fesshole I must've missed that one, great books!
@baiteh @fesshole yes indeed they are. I think the story was in All things Bright and Beautiful, though that book may be bundled with others depending on the edition you find. the american market editions often had two books in one volume.
@fesshole This is a scene from Monty Python's The Meaning Of Life, and I claim my ten pounds.
@fesshole This is what people did for fun before screen ubiquity. Remember that next time you have an inkling that kids should get outside more.
@log @fesshole oi, go outside and scare some motorists like normal human beings. stop skidibiding on fortnite. That's gonna rot your brain.

@nowayeast @fesshole I have two words for you.

Six.

Seven.

What unearthly horror shall be wrought and brought forth by the dread machinations of Today's Youths, by mere jaunt upon the green, when some fresh intellect hath already incubated 6-7?

@log @fesshole I have two words in response:

Eight...

Nine...

What I thought we wore showing off our basic counting skills.

I would like the children to please stay inside until they have learned the canon of Classical memes, such as All Your Base and Badgerbadgerbadger.

@fesshole if the Discworld novels taught me anything, if you'd spent too long playing the role of Death, you would've eventually become Him.
Dodged a bullet, just like you dodged a manslaughter charge.
@cardboardfox @fesshole that would explain my near rincewind experience.
@fesshole This is funny now, but if I'd encountered this myself I'd probably be in therapy for PTSD.
@fesshole were you ever approached by lead guitarists looking for a deal?
