Hey #runnersofmastodon — a question:

I’ve been running for years, and while I’m down from my historical high of 30-40 miles/week, I still do at least a 10k 2x/week. But for the last couple of months, my shins have been absolute murder after the first half-mile or so. I need to stop, massage them a bit, before they loosen up after another mile. Any ideas? Maybe time for new shoes?

I’ve been running on Nike Pegasus for a few years, rotating out after 600 miles or so, but just picked up some Salomon Aero Blaze gravel runners because this time of year I’m able to hit the trails early am. Hopefully that’ll solve it… it’s been frustrating!

@autumnleaves very high level thought here (likely not pertinent but it was for me) … i grew up running in nikes and went through quite a few pairs of pegasus (we’re talking 80’s & 90’s here) … then later in life i fell in love with the nike air max moto & burned through quite a few of those … i then stopped running for a bit & recently started again … the air max moto had been retired & i absolutely hated the modern version of the pegasus … i have switched over completely to asics running shoes now & have been really, really happy with them (currently the gel cumulus) … i never thought i’d see the day where i didn’t have a closet full of nike airs but i’m there now … also agree with prior feedback to consider new shoes earlier in mileage thresholds than before
@tuneJabber interesting, thanks. My last couple pairs of Pegasus have been a bit disappointing. I’ve used Salomon Speedcross trail runners for heavier off-asphalt runs (and use them exclusively for backpacking), and am hoping their gravel runners treat me equally well. We’ll see how it goes this week.
@autumnleaves i may be looking more into something worthy of trail running soon as there’s a local run club that i’m interested in whose weekly 4-mile run is a little more off-road … will look into the shoes you referenced 👣
