24 hrs with a #UnasPro8 and I like it #Unifi have made a nice machine and it’ll fit into my plans. But if you’re moving from #Synology then a few things to note a) Disks don’t hibernate, this is a rack mounted #NAS and design assumptions were this rack isn’t in your living room! In operation it’s quiet so far but with no hibernation then WD’s Pre-Emptive Wear Leveling has disks clicking when not read/writing to them. b) interface/local user account is designed for multiple user setups /1
This works well in #Unifi Network app but setting up local admin account is also your login for Unifi Drive when mounting via SMB and I don’t like that dual functionality so it’s not ideal but still to explore this fully as with a few things #UnasPro8 but it’s not a million miles away from #Synology except for the no Apps but I’m not planning to use this as anything other than secondary back up and network file serving. My main #NAS will be a UGreen DXP 6800 Pro running #UNRAID /2
Back in 2023 had been planning to replace my DS1819+ with successor to the DS1821+ with the expected more powerful replacement taking on more #SelfHosted applications and the 1819+ being a primary backup but we waited and waited for it and then #Synology management decided to shoot themselves in both feet with a series of moves each more ridiculous than the last as they fumbled both hardware and policy choices then reversed course in a number when the stupidity became undeniable. /3
That UGreen just recently entered the #NAS space and in a few years have produced for a similar price to the DS1825+ the much better DXP8800. With larger drives now than back in the day, I can manage easily with the 6 Bay DXP I think. This upgrade process is very expensive. It’ll take some time to complete but UGreen and Unifi just have more ambition than #Synology and #SelfHosting as much as possible is just a no-brainier in this day and age. I don’t trust Synology anymore. /end

@Rob The WD wear leveling clicks with no hibernation... yeah that gets old fast. I've been slowly swapping platter drives for cheap SSDs in my array and the noise difference is night and day. Samsung 870s and even budget LEVEN drives have been fine.

Good call on UGreen. Synology lost a lot of people with those moves.
