I'm doing some research to try to understand what is going on with the UK but what I mostly want to know is what other people think about Jeremy Corbyn.

Please if you have any thoughts or opinions on Corbyn, especially regarding particular things he did or did not do, please tell me. Pm if you don't want to reply publicly

If you find out, please let us know!
I'm afraid #Corbyn for all his good points has had his day. He carries too much baggage and is still regarded here as a "communist" left-winger, carrying the taint of #Russia. Because of infighting, #YourParty hasn't got off the ground.
Events have now overtaken him and he is now being superceded by #ZackPolanski and the #GreenParty who look to have captured the left ground

@resl

My take:
Corbyn's own internal contradictions (anti-Europe/EEU but pro-International Revolution) has led to ineffectiveness.

@miguelpergamon I'm curious, if you'll say more!

@resl

I usually keep my Corbyn comments just to pointing out how the right-wing media and Corbyn's Labour critics endlessly use the same talking points that they believe nullify his appeal to voters.

The right-wing has basically added all mention of him to the menu of their group-bonding sessions -- him as a laughable bogeyman.

The Labour critiques mainly repeat that there is "anti-semitism" in a section of his followers (not in him!) as a reason to turn away from him.

Others on here are much more aware of Corbyn than I, they having been Labour and/or Momentum members. I'm basically like a targeted floating voter (like a sea-mine, perhaps 🤔), I will target the right-wing and blue-labour for their obvious fascism, hatred and incompetence but I don't give "the Left" thoughtless support either.

@resl my impression is that he was and is a good old socialist. I knew some people in momentum, the movement to try and get him to lead the party to victory - apparently he & team were really not up to date with tech stuff. I believe he did not take a clear stand on Brexit, which I think was a mistake.
@douginamug This tracks with my impression too at the moment

@douginamug @resl my perception is he was held to an impossible standard with Brexit.

His own personal position was anti-EU (old school Labour left style — look at who took which side in the 70s referendum). But party policy was pro-EU, and as far as I know he consistently stuck to that position. (It’s obviously not the only thing he differed from the party on, even as leader.)

But that wasn’t good enough for some people — even though he was willing to put his own preference aside in favour of the party’s (and rightly so), the fact that he even had that opinion was unacceptable. (Either because Brexit was such a divisive subject and some people were unwilling to hear nuanced views, or because some people would latch onto anything they could find to criticise Corbyn with, or both.)

@benjamineskola @douginamug I need to learn more about the left wing anti EU idea. I'm struggling to understand why Jeremy or other leftists would be anti-EU. Is it anti EU or just criticism of the EU's failings to achieve its original purpose?

@resl @douginamug In short the point is that the EU is a capitalist institution at its core. It’s socially liberal in many ways (within limits) but it’s not clear that it’s compatible with state control of the economy.

From memory: while state-owned enterprises exist within the EU there are limits (perhaps unclear ones?), and it’s sometimes considered a forbidden interferenfe with competition. And so there’s a concern that if a member state tried to go further with nationalisation than had already been tried, EU law would be used to prevent that happening.

The other example that comes to mind is union activity being treated as an anti-competitive action and so also disallowed.

There are also critiques from the left about EU border policy: free movement within the EU (a good thing IMO) comes at the expense of increased enforcement (and violence at its borders (especially the mediterranean).
