Ugh, I missed a trigger in one of my commander games tonight while playing Velociramptor (Pantlaza).

Turn 5 I cast Zetalpa, Primal Dawn & discovered into Last March of the Ents. Plopped a ton of dudes on the battlefield. Including Wrathful Raptors.

I was gonna win on turn 6 by using Shaman of Forgotten Ways to set everyone's life total to the number of creatures they had, then use Akroma's Will to take out my opponents. But the guy two seats ahead of me cast Blasphemous Act.

Which would have killed all of my opponents if I hadn't missed Wrathful Raptor's trigger. Sigh. I just totally blanked on that. So the game continued.

Later, another opponent exiled all our creatures & artifacts so he was well-positioned to win. He took out our other 2 opponents and had 121 life. I feared I had no chance to win, even with Akroma's Will.

But I rebuilt & drew Finale of Devastation. Finale'd for 10, and tutored for Dinosaurs on a Spaceship to give all my dinos vigilance and trample, juuust in case. That plus Akroma's Will meant I did 156 damage on turn 10? 12?

So I'd just like to point out that, once again, the two people who wiped the board did NOT win the game.

@sapphire
Board wipes do not guarantee the win but they can help.
Yesterday I won on the spot with hearthhull by playing Planetary Annihilation and dealing 26 DMG to each opponent

@DerFlo

That's fair. I have also won using Wakening Sun's Avatar to win - but the key is they only work if you're going to win that turn. People who wipe the board to reset the game, hoping they can then outpace opponents who were outpacing them, it never works. If my opponents are building their board state faster than me and I reset the game, my opponents will most likely rebuild faster than me again. Rather than reset the game, people should build more efficient decks that let them actually win faster. I NEVER play Wakening Sun's Avatar unless I can then win the very same turn. I don't want the game to drag on for another 6 turns after that. I've held Avatar in my hand so long that opponents made me pitch my hand and I lost my board wipe, but I don't care. I wasn't in a position to win, so I'm not gonna use it.

@DerFlo

My husband played a game on Friday where one of his opponents destroyed all creatures. That player's two dudes were protected with shield counters, so he thought he was giving himself an advantage. But he didn't even take out a single opponent after clearing the board. Another player immediately rebuilt and killed him the following turn.

I play against someone who frequently tries to wipe the board and use Teferi's Protection to save his own creatures. He's used this strategy many, many times, and has then gone on to win the game after that only once. It's not a winning strategy.

@sapphire That Blasphemous Act would've been perfect with Wrathful Raptors. Those are the plays you remember forever, the ones that got away. At least you pulled off the win anyway with that Finale.

@GrimDeck

Yeah, and hopefully my shame at missing the trigger is enough that I'll never make that mistake again. đŸ˜‚

@sapphire Those are the best lessons. Way better than winning off something you barely remember.
