Mother in law wants to replace her 17 Tucson with a Forester, Rav4, or CRV. She has 52k miles on her FWD Tucson and it's mainly low speed commuting. I have 0 Subaru experience. Any reasons to go for the Rav4/CRV instead? Gas Mileage isn't too much of a concern nor is the slow infotainment.
She likes the Forrester and CR-V. Rav4 is out. She needs to test drive and then we will see what she is going to get.
@sumo She didn't shop the current Korean offerings? Seems like both Hyundai and Kia have gotten much better since 2017.
@Basmitharts She likes her Tucson but she wants something different.
@Basmitharts I'm really worried about the Forester Infotainment but I'll work with her to learn how to use it. Mainly she'll use Carplay but hvac stuff other than temp up and down are in that.
@sumo @Basmitharts what's the problem with the infotainment?
@chromblitzen @Basmitharts From reviews that I have watched/read the Subaru Infotainment is not the best. It's a bit slow and the hvac controls are in it. I think it will be a challenge for her to use it.
She chose the Forrester Limited non hybrid in Dark Mahogany Pearl. We go to the dealer this afternoon.
@sumo this sounds like a case where you just sit in each and test drive them and go for whatever's most comfortable and/or the best deal. At low speeds and putting on few miles, I think any other differences between them will be pretty much purely academic.
@autonerdery Good point. Thanks.
@sumo only other thing I'd note is that the RAV4 is in the middle of changing over to a new generation, so given how Toyota's allocation system seems to work, there's probably a wait on those if she's looking to buy new, whereas she could probably drive a new Forester or CR-V off the lot today.

@autonerdery @sumo Yep my only 2 cents was going to be that Toyota dealers can be a little precious about their rav4 inventories.

The forester would probably have a more “traditional” feel, but I don’t think you can go wrong.

@autonerdery @sumo
For what it's worth, Toyota and Honda always seem to top the most stolen lists, I think because they are very reliable and easy to repair in countries where stolen cars tend to be exported.

Comparatively, Subaru and their unique boxer engines with dual separate heads tend to not fall as much in this category. They are very reliable but engine repairs are best done at the dealership.

Possibly a point in Subaru's favour.

@autonerdery @sumo
Also if she has a Tucson now, the comparable Subaru would be the Crosstrek. The Forester is bigger and consequently a bit more expensive. Unless she has suddenly taken up the double-bass, the Crosstrek has ample room.

Edit: source: we have a Crosstrek

@DenOfEarth @autonerdery The main reason for this change is not being able to easily get into the Tuscon anymore. She did some research and found that the Forrester, Rav4, and CR-V are supposed to be easy to get in and out of. We have an RDX and she can easily get into it so a CR-V will work. The crosstek is out as it's too low. She wants to open the door and go straight across. We are going to a Subaru dealer just to sit in the Forrester to see if it is a good match. I like the CR-V

@sumo @autonerdery
Oh well that is some decent requirements-gathering that definitely changes things.

I don't find the Crosstrek comfy on long drives and even my much smaller i3 I find more comfy and easier to get into.

Surprisingly american cars can be quite nice. My Charger was great for road trips. And they tend to have big doors that facilitate entry.

Maybe look at power memory seats? Some will glide back to facilitate egress and re-entry, then readjust to the driver's last settings.

@DenOfEarth @autonerdery My wife is taller than me and the RDX is her daily. Tying the seat position, mirrors, and radio to the keyfob is awesome. When I use my key it changes everything to my preferences. It is a feature that we now require on any of our main cars. In my GTI she just shoves the seat all the way back.

Attached: 1 image @[email protected] @serichards @ZeKik @[email protected] A friend of my wife's was visiting once, a petite lady, and I had to move her car to take mine and go fetch some missing dinner ingredient. It was a Lexus with memory seats. There was plenty of room to get in but when I started the car with her key, it started to contract to her size! I survived without losing a knee but it felt like the trash compactor scene in Star Wars A New Hope. If only R2 had been there to save me.

@sumo the hybrid forester isnt out yet so that would mean a rav4 phev would be my choice. i currently own 2 subarus and my wife and i have owned many more that we no longer have and i wouldnt buy any current subaru suv. i take that back my choice would be keep a paid off tucson
@makesubarugayagain You are not the first person to tell me this. And I would prefer she keep it too but she hits her head every time she gets in or out. That is with the seat all the way to the floor. I would like to see her get a hybrid crv but who knows what will happen?
@sumo I like subarus but in my experience they need more repair work (and all the parts have to be OEM or they have weird issues) compared to Honda stuff.
@sumo I’m a “Subaru fan” (if you can call it that), as I’ve appreciated the reliability of their vehicles for many, many years. I’ve been driving the latest Forester model (MY25) for a year now, which, unfortunately, is only available in the 2-liter version in the EU.
If you’re looking for something a bit smaller but more agile, the Crosstrek is also a good choice. But of course, that’s just my subjective opinion. My wife is very happy with her Hyundai ix20.
@chromblitzen The main issue is my mother in law getting into and out of the car. The Crosstrek would be perfect for her but she hits her head on the roof. Forrester is perfect in that regard and she drove it today. she loves it. Do you have any issues with the infotainment?
@sumo I do not have any issues. Every thing is working w/o any problems. I have the Platinum-Model (MY25) and the HK-Soundsystem is working also great
@chromblitzen She took to it pretty well. She got the Limited so it has the HK Soundsystem, but she doesn't listen to music when she drives. But we got her phone hooked up and the wireless Apple Carplay works great! She is driving it back to DE today so I'm hoping to get a positive report once she is home.
