This is a fantastic, factual, very technical, but readable and understandable breakdown of why and how every news website is bad UI design and decimates your device with tracking, negotiating, and modal pop up hell.

The 49MB Web Page

A look at modern news websites. How programmatic ad-tech, huge payloads and hostile architecture destroyed the reading experience.

@chris Thanks for reading! 🙏
@chris On 9-11, CNN and many other news web sites were overwhelmed and instantly removed all the crap from their web site to give just the news, in order to reduce the load on their servers.

@jfmezei @chris

After reading about the 49MB web page, I began to think of my own website, which has been around since the early days of the WWW. It's all HTML, first hand coded and later maintained with Dreamweaver. The pages are very small.

When I type my name into Google or DuckDuckGo, my website always comes up first in the search results. Is this because it's been around so long, or is there an algorithm that shows it to me first but not to other people?

@jfmezei @chris USA Today sites still serve the non-shitty version of the site to GDPR countries

@chris This is part of why I stopped using CTV as a secondary news source.

They were hijacking my device’s audio session playing their newsvert instead of my music/podcast.

@chris @Noisecolor I think the guardian is better, but I run with ad blockers, no third party cookies, no social plugins allowed, and do not track directives.
