that's right! it goes in the DOWNLOADS folder
@thermia it takes .784 seconds to ls downloads on my phone
@thermia 3720 files

@tay ohh yeah okay you have it beat there

❯ ls -1 Downloads/ | wc -l 1059

@thermia my downloads folder is only 18GB
@tay wow, could not be thermia

thermias has shrunk in size since it removed a bunch of 50~ GB movies that were lying around
@thermia ah, that is an effective methods for freeing up disk space
@tay @thermia Meanwhile I'm over here like

ll Downloads/ | wc -l
24
@Ollie @thermia very clean! Impressive
@tay @thermia Thanks! I try to keep it clean, unlike my phone gallery, which is distributed across 3 devices and some of it was lost due to a distro-hop that I forgot to backup beforehand.
@tay @thermia I've actually been trying to figure out how to do my projects folder for a while, some things are hard to categorize, and also I have to make sure my stuff isn't too nested because that can be hard to navigate.

I keep a
~/Projects folder and this is what I have in it as far as root level folders are concerned. The recordings folder is just a dump of voice recordings from my phone because I was cleaning my phone out before a flight.
@tay @thermia I typically use the media directories like Documents, Video, Music, and Pictures for completed things that will likely never be touched again, and mostly for other people's stuff not my own.

Although Documents is kind of an exception cause I have a lot of notes and stuff in there.
@Ollie @tay thermia has FL studio bundle things together under the project folder (named after the date when it was created + some string that may or may not describe the project, usually the string is just "gorp"), and then when thermia pulls in a sample or something, it gets copied to the projects folder

but that's just for music stuff. after effect projects are everywhere, and programming projects too

@Ollie @tay

❯ ls -1 | grep gorp | wc -l 21

@thermia @tay I have a lot of random music projects on my nas but this is just stuff I have pulled down, 2 unpublished songs and a cool synth patch in an ardour project lol.
@thermia @tay well the last one is published but only on fedi cause I haven't gotten around to making the cover art yet.
@Ollie @tay @thermia one gigantic zip file per year, yeah?
@f4grx @tay @thermia lol, I just clean out my downloads about every month or two, and I don't use it for anything other than where firefox dumps downloads by default.
@thermia @tay those go in the "torrents" folder, though

@thermia @tay

You make me feel virtuous.

% ls -1 Downloads/ | wc -l
653

@tay @thermia I have a cronjob that deletes anything older than 2 weeks in ~/Downloads
@[email protected] @tay honest to miku, some of thermias music projects would go missing
@thermia @tay if they're music they go in ~/Music
@thermia @tay @[email protected] if i did that on my work laptop the conseque would probably be disastrous lol
@[email protected] @thermia i feel like the fear would persuade me to sort my files
@tay @thermia ~/Downloads is a buffer for both to-sort stuff and stuff I need to download but don't need to keep
@izzy but what if you neeeeed it
@GroupNebula563 then it goes somewhere other than ~/Downloads, or gets re-downloaded
@GroupNebula563 @izzy I leave large files in “~/Downloads” that I may need to work on for a while but I could download them again if necessary. I don’t have that directory backed up. If I want to keep the files more permanently, I move them to the directories that are backed up.
@izzy I use Hazel, https://www.noodlesoft.com/manual/hazel/hazel-overview/ with a bunch of rules to watch my ~/Downloads folder on my Mac and put shit where it belongs. GAMECHANGER. (Not a paid endorsement just a longtime happy customer) @tay @thermia @gregtitus
Hazel Overview – Noodlesoft

@izzy @thermia @tay my default downloads destination is /tmp ^^'
@jakob @thermia @tay I used to do that but it used a lot of memory, hence actually using ~/Downloads
@izzy @thermia @tay I have a bash script to auto sort the contents of Downloads into Documents, Pictures, etc. (let me know if you want it)
@izzy @thermia @tay On my old install I used to have everything be in a pile in Downloads. Kinda glad I accidentally destroyed the filesystem so I could be neater upon starting fresh.
@thermia 4128 by now!
@thermia but ls only takes 0.608s now; glad to learn ls perfomance improvements are outscaling my data hoarding :D

@tay

❯ du -hd1 Downloads | tail -1 152G Downloads
:D

@thermia This but for "Desktop" @ my mom. And me dying inside.
@ljrk
I don't even use the desktop (I hear Linux will be on it next year though)
@thermia

@thermia It seems my fixed alt text didn't federate. thanks misskey

"it goes in the square hole!" meme. a tiktok duet of a woman looking on in agony as every block in one of those block fitting children's toys is put into the square hole.

@CenTdemeern1
@thermia
At work at least I use the downloads folder as its the one that doesn't synch with sharepoint.
@CenTdemeern1 @thermia came here for this 👍🏿 😁
@thermia puts you in the documents folder
@thermia @vyr I feel called out
@thermia @vyr my current windows/linux workstation

@fuchsiii @vyr

❯ du -hd1 ~/ | tail -1 563G .
you're in good company

@thermia @vyr @fuchsiii

% du -sh ~
1.5T /Users/sigu

🙃

@fuchsiii @thermia @vyr ditch WinShit11 amd get some.proper storage instead.
@thermia NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
GOD NO PLEASE
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
@thermia occasionally I put things in more specific folders ..... inside the downloads folder
@anglemaece @thermia the only folder in my downloads folder i have (that isnt just unzipped stuff) is for my 822 sideberry tab backups (i really dont need those)
