I will be offline most of the weekend so I'll bring forward my semi-regular news roundup.
One of our committee members was ruminating this week about how many municipalities or government agencies have left the X platform. So it's time for a bit of research to see if we can put together a decent list of government accounts that have made the easy and correct decision. Here's what I've found (west to east) but let me know if I've missed any.

#DigitalSovereignty #MastodonCanada

For some reason I'm not surprised that our west coast is leading the way. Here are the government accounts who have left X.

British Columbia:
- Port Moody
- Ladysmith
- District of North Vancouver
- Central Saanich
- View Royal
- Parksville
- Mission
- Island Health

District of North Vancouver ditches X (formerly Twitter)

Complaints to the district about use of the social media platform have been on the rise since Elon Musk took over

North Shore News

Lots of opportunity across the west and north. Somehow I'm not surprised about Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Yukon:
- Yukon Provincial Government

Alberta: none found

North West Territories: none found

Saskatchewan: none found

Manitoba:
- Métis Federation

Nunavut: none found

https://sboots.ca/2025/06/09/the-yukon-government-switched-from-x-to-bluesky-other-canadian-governments-should-do-the-same/

The Yukon government switched from X to Bluesky. Other Canadian governments should do the same.

In early April, the Yukon government announced that it would no longer be using X (formerly Twitter) in response to new US tariffs taking effect. The Yukon government launched an official Bluesky account the same day. I’d love to see other Canadian jurisdictions and government organizations make the switch away from X, just like the Yukon did.

Running down the rest of the country shows some progress in Ontario, but only a little progress elsewhere.

Ontario:
- Whitby
- Cambridge
- St. Catharines, Ontario

Quebec:

New Brunswick:
- New Brunswick Provincial Government

Prince Edward Island:

Nova Scotia:
- Halifax

Newfoundland and Labrador:
- St. John's
- Newfoundland and Labrador Public Libraries

National/Federal:
- Supreme Court of Canada

New Brunswick leaving X, premier says concerns about it ‘deeply troubling’

X has been facing global condemnation because its AI chatbot, Grok, is able to produce sexualized images of people without their consent.

Global News

These municipalities and government agencies have all decided that they do not wish to be associated with hate speech, racism, and, misinformation. They still need to join the Mastodon Canada community and move closer to digital sovereignty in their use of social media.

With your assistance we can continue to add to this list by proactively making use of our email templates and soon to be announced petition process.

Have a great weekend #MastoCanucks.
