The Crown Theatre, Eccles : 1899 – 2019

Once, The Crown was called one of the "prettiest in the north."

In the early years the stage hosted Shakespearean dramas and revues. In the 1930s, it was converted into a cinema. By the 1960s it found a new life as a bingo hall.

Closing in the 1980s, it fell into ruins.

Eventually, in 2019, a large fire destroyed it leaving only the facade standing.

@ObsidianUrbex I drove past it a few days ago, it's looking very sad now, and I'm old enough to remember it being in use.

Terribly sad isn't it. Has any work progressed on the flats? I haven't been by for ages
@ObsidianUrbex There's loads of scaffolding around, especially at the front, but I assume that's just to keep it from falling down.
@fredonline
Ahh yea, wonder if those flats will ever be built 😶
@ObsidianUrbex Yeah, there's supposed to be around 80 'affordable' apartments. I wonder where all their car owners will park - it's chock a block around there already!
@ObsidianUrbex Had a slow drive past of the Crown this morning - there are internal brick walls going up, so it looks like work is apace. It will be - shall I say 'interesting' - to see the finished product.

Oh thanks for the update! It definitely looks like work is going ahead then. I did wonder if it would stall forever until the facade fell down (or, suffered some "accidental" strike to make it fall down). Whole thing is very sad, I wish it had a second chance like the Plaza in Stockport 💙
