This winter has been unusually good for sightings of sea ducks. I'd never seen a velvet scoter before, then along came four of them. The 'velvet' part of the name comes from the velvety sheen on the males' black feathers. They're an unusual and quirky species and really uncommon.

@Spaceways Thanks -- it was a difficult shot on maximum zoom. It would have been hard to identify the ducks using usual binoculars.
