Telly in the 1960s was ... different.

The voiceover on the first 20 seconds of this is quite amazing.

1965: A Flatshare in London | Man Alive | Classic Documentary | BBC Archive

YouTube

For those who don't want to Youtube, it is as follows:

Girls.

Tall girls, short girls, fat girls, thin girls, ugly girls and pretty girls.

Tarts and floozies, nymphomaniacs and gangsters' molls.

And ... nice girls, respectable girls, upper middle-class girls with good manners and impeccable accents.

This is the story of four girls. They all live together in one flat, in one square, in one particular part of London.

@losttourist
Are you sure these aren’t the lyrics to Girls, Girls, Girls by 70s band Sailor?

#TOTP

@losttourist I read this at least half an hour ago.

Hopefully I shall unclench my jaw before lunch.

😬

@losttourist this is like when Marvel does steampunk alternative reality versions of their heroes, except here steampunk is the swinging sixties and the Avengers are all self-absorbed Lena Dunham characters.
@losttourist She’s made it. She’s getting married. Leaving the flat next to pimps, prostitutes and single mothers.
I watched that a few weeks ago. So fascinating. Girls leaving the suburbs to share a flat till they meet a man and can get married and move to the suburbs

@losttourist

Wow. That intro is begging for a remix into some hard dnb or something.

@Troggie @losttourist it could go into a sweetly Lemon Jelly thing, or some nasty Aphex Twin/Squarepusher jam.

I'm amazed it's not been done (well known, at least) already.

@Troggie I have no idea what I'm doing, but I made a thing.

The main track is called The Oddyssey and is by a long-non-existent (I think) group called 303 Infinity. If I've breached anyone's copyright, I'm so sorry.

#girls

@losttourist just to say I have seen this but haven’t yet had a chance to listen properly and I want to.

@KaraLG84 @Troggie I have to say that it is ridiculously easy to do Cool Things with computers these days. When I had my tea last night I didn't even have any audio editing software on my machine.

By the time I went to bed I'd not only downloaded & installed #Audacity, but worked out how to use its basic features and got it to spit out a not-too-terrible mash up of a 60s BBC presenter talking about girls and an ancient trance/D&B track I had lying around!

@losttourist Magnificent work. @Troggie

@DJDarren @Troggie Ta.

I went to bed last night dreaming "Tarts, floozies, nymphomaniacs & gangsters molls". Could have been worse 😆

@losttourist finally remembered to listen. This is incredible. I might have a go myself! However it has tangentially reminded me of this, which will be my earworm. All day. Again.

QUINT FONTANA 'Girl Girl Girl Girl Girl (You're the Only Girl in the World) Original Video

YouTube

LB: Quint Fontana was a drunken rascal and a terrible mess. But man alive, he wrote the best song ever recorded. He was the Wyld Stallyns of the lounge scene, such was his ability to bring world peace.

@Troggie @losttourist

@Troggie Aww *blush* thank you.

I've spent the last few days now with "tarts, floozies, nymphomaniacs and gangsters molls" going round my head, as I try to think of other tracks to edit it into 😆

@Troggie I have lived over half a century on this godforsaken planet without ever having been previously aware of this track, or even this man's, existence.

You have now ruined that glorious winning streak!

@losttourist haha if it helps, I don’t think he’s around any more. As a comedian anyway. He did one Edinburgh and quit I think. Probably still around as a person though.
