I live on the east coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. It's herring spawning season and, as usual, thousands of sea lions are in the area feasting on the fish. For the first time, sea lions have decided to rest on the beach at the end of the spit where I live. It's interesting to see and as noisy as you might imagine. The 2 photos show the north and south sides of the spit.
The unusual sight has made the news and there has been thousands of people showing up to see the sea lions. It's a rural area, with a one lane, dead end road to the spit beach. Traffic and noise from the tourist/gawkers has been far worse than the sea lions. Then there are the people who do not pay attention to regulations about approaching wildlife. The sea lions were all sleeping peacefully until she approached within 4 meters.

@mlmartens dumb people being dumb
@chris It's worse when they bring their kids in close.
@chris @mlmartens It reminds me of the idiots trying to get selfies with Mama grizzly and her cubs in Banff or on the side of a highway. WIth their young children! 🙄

@CatherineBabault @chris @mlmartens they're called "lions" for a reason.

And the reason isn't that they sleep all day... though I'm sure that's part of it.

I really need to get longer lens so I can do that kind of photography again; my 24-105mm RF F4/L isn't going to cut it.

@mlmartens

I propose a few new pronouns.

How about "shememe", "hememe", "theymeme", or "youmeme" for people who are so totally self-absorbed that they care not what harm their self-gratifying actions may do to other people or the world? Nor do they care how trivial or null any self-benefit of their actions may be.

Pronounced "she-me-me" etc.

Usage: "Shememe proved her nullness by intruding on those needing rest, for no benefit except showing other people her memeness."

Préservons notre superbe faune et flore sauvage !
