@beer_mat_movies Have previews before official opening dates always been a thing?
For music releases, more and more bands are releasing throughout the week to avoid the new music Friday deluge.
@ianRobinson "Always" is something I can't answer without going to the history books...
But from the year 2000 I know they've been used. Generally in children's films, Goat and Hoppers were both weekend previews if memory serves.
EPiC had a week long format limit/preview before general release.
And, How To Make A Killing releases on Wednesday instead of Friday this week.
Advanced starts, Wednesday and Thursday opens and some previews were used to 'juice' the opening box office take, more screenings, more money. Or they can be used to try and get in first when up against real competition when two blockbusters go head to head.
With kids' movies it's generally used for marketing, to create word of mouth on the playground.
Studios seem to be appeasing cinemas by allowing more 'secret screenings' than I've ever known for the same reason.
