@ianRobinson Project Hail Mary previews this weekend FYI.
@beer_mat_movies Ta. Just looked, and Omniplex Dundonald are showing it on the MAXX screen.
@ianRobinson Not a fan of the studio limiting the screenings to up the average though.

@beer_mat_movies Have previews before official opening dates always been a thing?

For music releases, more and more bands are releasing throughout the week to avoid the new music Friday deluge.

@ianRobinson "Always" is something I can't answer without going to the history books...

But from the year 2000 I know they've been used. Generally in children's films, Goat and Hoppers were both weekend previews if memory serves.

EPiC had a week long format limit/preview before general release.

And, How To Make A Killing releases on Wednesday instead of Friday this week.

Advanced starts, Wednesday and Thursday opens and some previews were used to 'juice' the opening box office take, more screenings, more money. Or they can be used to try and get in first when up against real competition when two blockbusters go head to head.

With kids' movies it's generally used for marketing, to create word of mouth on the playground.

Studios seem to be appeasing cinemas by allowing more 'secret screenings' than I've ever known for the same reason.

@beer_mat_movies @ianRobinson I remember previews on thursdays being a common occurrence back in the 90s.
@andrewg @beer_mat_movies Is that one day before opening? It’s probably more now so they can report bigger preview box office takings in the trades to generate publicity.
@ianRobinson @beer_mat_movies Yes. They were always popular, so much so that some cinemas started doing midnight previews for movies that didn’t officially permit preview screenings. That was later though.
