I liked Andy Weir's The Martian (book and movie), and have been looking forward to eventually seeing/reading Project Hail Mary.

But after his recent comments describing all modern Trek as shit (weaselly "I was taken out of context" semi-apology and all), and a comment from a few years ago about how he hates politics in SF, writes SF without any political content (which, as Foz Meadows points out in the linked article, is ridiculous), and thinks Star Trek doesn't need all the politics and just wants to see Klingons and Romulans shooting at each other....

My current opinion is that he's a very popular author who is exhibiting a truly remarkable lack of both personal introspection and critical thought regarding science fiction as a whole, and is apparently quite a bit of an ass, to boot.

Politics in SFF: Arguing With Andy Weir

#TheMartian has been compared to Defoe’s #RobinsonCrusoe. One could say in #ProjectHailMary, Weir continues the analogy with his space Crusoe finding his “Friday”

I loved Project Hail Mary. Start to finish. My entire family loved it. Even my 77yo dad who we dragged along to go see it loved it — and he generally detests scifi.

So hear me when I say this (ie read the above again), for *me* The Martian still inches out Project Hail Mary. Just by a smidget. Barely. But it does.

But both are awesome. And I can’t wait to rewatch PHM when it comes to streaming. In the meantime, I’ll rewatch The Martian (for the umpteenth time).

And bring on the new sci-fi novel Andy Weir is currently writing!

Finally, here we go… It’s taken decades, but some of us still remember the opening chapter in 1969. I remember being told colonies would probably be living on the moon in the 1990’s, but I’d love to see a manned Mars landing during my lifetime. Preferably with a disco music soundtrack while the astronauts attempt to grow martian potatoes…

The book is excellent so I'll be watching this.

#theMartian was also an amazing book. The film was close to the story but missed out some great parts of the original storyline.
