It got very warm around here so I'm getting started on gardening. I stumble, literary, across these two geodes. Some of you may remember that I keep finding small geodes in my backyard... but this (one in the back in photo) may be the biggest one. My collection grows!

I pick up a couple of rocks when I'm hiking, so I've been wanting to find a way to ID them. I just downloaded an app called "Rock Identifier," for which the free period is only 7 days 🤨 also I don't much care for the "Healing Content" because I'm not one of crystal people. If you have any recommendations for a good app, let me know!

@Tamami "Healing Content" gave me a chortle!

healed by the magical healing powers.... of content.

I am all for the placebo, and its incredible powers, but the word healing and the word content together is crazy.

like "Spiritual Discounts".
or "Karma Sales."

@falcennial OMG it reads: Clear Quartz's association with the crown chakra means it may have significant influences on the brain" If that's the case, the world would be more intelligent! Totally "magical"

@Tamami 😂😂🤌

it's amazing isnt it.

but I suppose meditating on such stories is still real meditation.

and even thinking about how much one loves quartz can only be good for the mood and the brain.

plus it's genuinely funny! lots to love.

this has gotten all my chakrae firing at once 😂

@Tamami @falcennial

I facet and do lapidary.My wife has a Doctorate in Quantum Physics.
Do you realize how rich we could be if we were dishonest?

For some reason those folks are impressed by that degree.

I could cut and polish stones and she could tell them some mumble jumble about the synergistic energy waves that are intersecting with their focal point or some such crap.

Scary thing is those folks believe that stuff. We still laugh about the time a lady who called herself a doctor asked to see my wifes Van de Graaff generator. Wife thought she was a teacher as she was talking about her students. Until she pulled a crystal out and touched it to it. Said it needed recharged so she could talk to her spiritual helpers.

@nerb @falcennial My husband does faceting too! Apparently all that geometric stuff clicks with his nerdery. My MIL who has master's in education believes that a crystal pendulum swings differently on organic produce versus non-organic. Okay then 😅

@Tamami I have a colleague that swears by AI image searches for rock IDs. She actually uses chatGPT. I bet some of the other AIs would also work, but GPT is the one more of our students are familiar with.

Unless you're in a mining district or other place with more exotic minerals, it does quite well.

@DrKylara That makes sense! I'll try that, thank you!
@Tamami an alternative would be pick up a DK book from the library kiddo section. They can be great references. Also, Rockd app might be helpful. I use it without signing in. Gives lots of geo info.
@kellyromanych With all those reference books we have, I'd think we have something on the bookshelves... I'll go look! I might try that app too. Thank you!
@Tamami altho, i could see posting a pic & the fedirockies chiming in to ID 🤣
@kellyromanych Yes, that's another good reason to be on fediverse! Also, look at that... we did have a couple of rock books, although these lack pretty pictures 😔
@Tamami oh, maybe the key in the field guide could help.? That's why I like the kids books. Lots of pretty pics 😉
@kellyromanych @Tamami
Jumping in here…
Try geology.com and look at their store. They have books & rock sets to learn identification.

@Tamami
If you're up to learn a bit of geology, you might grasp enough knowledge on how to do it on your own (with or without help of classifiers and other books).

Some time ago I found a bunch of entry level lectures from a geology professor, made during the pandemic, that were interesting enough to follow, like that one https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLOf4plee9UzCH2w8e2_xpvaq6w1gGCf5Q

And I bet there is an adjacent community here on fediverse, just one or two hashtags away.

@gemelen Thank you! This will be a good armchair lecture for the evening. Yay!!

THIS is the definitive introduction to rocks.

@Tamami great news it's not an app it's the little guide book in the gift shop at the state park near your hiking spot!
@t54r4n1 I WISH! Most of our state parks have no gift shops. Makes me sad because I love gift shops 😭
@Tamami "Rock Identifier: Stone ID" on Apple's App Store is actually very good. $40/year is not cheap, but I paid for it last year, and found it to be pretty accurate.
