This week on #ThePlaylist we celebrated:

Ya Mama

Yes, YOUR mother. We celebrated her*, and we celebrated** her good. Two hours of songs about *your* mother.
_
*if she is/was great. We will berate her if not. Harshly.
**or berate her

NEXT WEEK ON #ThePlaylist:

Toys and Games

Two hours of fun for all the family. A radio show for ages 0-100, but please beware of small parts.

Fling your suggestions my way using #ThePlaylistSuggestion, and together we'll plumb the depths of the nostalgia that prevents us from accepting that we're all adults now, whether we like it or not.

@DJDarren my #hiphop #thePlaylistSuggestion for the theme Toys and Games is Missy Elliott’s Toyz, a truly magnificent track about toys.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LRPyScJ6Ak

Toyz Interlude / Toyz

YouTube
@DJDarren also, nobody suggesting Primus or Sausage? tsk.

@DJDarren #ThePlaylistSuggestion
Devonnes - I'm Gonna Pick Up My Toys (and Go Home)

The Magnetic Fields - When She Plays the Toy Piano

Bowie - It's No Game (pt. 1)
or indeed
Bowie - It's No Game (pt. 2)

HMHB - Fuckin' 'Ell It's Fred Titmus
(cricket being a game)

Scott Walker - The Seventh Seal
(because of the reference to the knight playing chess with Death)

Bomb the Bass - Megablast
(this was one of the first songs I ever suggested, and I'm almost certain you played it, so perhaps I shouldn't suggest it again - but that was such a long long time ago, and it's an absolute banger)

(oh, and it fits the topic because it was the theme to the 16-bit shoot-'em-up Xenon 2)

Bed suggestions:
Kevin Ayers - Joy of a Toy Continued

Pye Corner Audio - Sleep Games

@RolloTreadway @DJDarren +1 for the seventh seal. Absolutely perfect suggestion, Rollo.

@RolloTreadway @DJDarren

Just the biggest +1 on that Megablast track, because Xenon II was one of my very favourite games, ever. Very occasionally I see a reference to 'super nashwan power' and it pleases me greatly.

Betty Boo's Doin' The Do occupies a similar bit of headspace for me in that it was used in another Bitmap Brothers game intro (Magic Pockets) but Megablast was particularly brilliant.

@daveybot @RolloTreadway @DJDarren yeah, absolutely: Xenon II = happy days 😎
@DJDarren I'm not sure what the rules are on having more than one #thePlaylistSuggestion but I've two related ones.
HMHB's 'All I Want for Christmas is a Dukla Prague Away Kit' for it's tale of both Scalextric and Subbuteo … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=na12OyJEgJ8
All I Want for Christmas is a Dukla Prague Away Kit

YouTube
@pete I've have people suggest as many as ten tunes. I'd rather it was less than that, but ultimately it all gets copy/pasted into the Big Spreadsheet anyway, so fill yer boots.
@DJDarren … and then keeping with the toy car racing, Sleaford Mods' 'TCR' #ThePlaylistSuggestion https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KT2mLi7ldew
Sleaford Mods - TCR (Official Video)

YouTube
@pete @DJDarren Excellent suggestion, I wish I'd thought of it!
@pete @DJDarren I considered suggesting All I Want for Christmas is a Dukla Prague Away Kit, but it felt wrong to me because it isn't Christmas!

@DJDarren

Just the one at the moment:

Harry Nilsson - Cuddly Toy

Harry Nilsson - Cuddly Toy (Audio)

YouTube

@Nickiquote @DJDarren could we do Roachford again, do you think?

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@swisslet @DJDarren I assumed someone would suggest it.
@swisslet @DJDarren Oh god, there’s a Gary Barlow version of Roachford’s Cuddly Toy, which is not good.
@DJDarren #ThePlaylistSuggestion Joss Stone - Snakes And Ladders

@DJDarren My 13yo son has suggested Lifelight from Super Smash Bros

I'm going to have to think some more for my own suggestions

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren
OK here's a few from me #ThePlaylistSuggestion

Tin Soldiers - Stiff Little Fingers
Sick for Toys - The Sugarcubes
Marbles - John Grant
Souvenirs - John Prine

@DJDarren

- Toy Soldiers by Martika

- Puppet on a String by Sandie Shaw

- Games Without Frontiers by Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush

- Ragdoll or Toys in the Attic by Aerosmith

And my number 1 choice? Ace of Spades by Motörhead. Card game, innit.

Dr Mrs Swisslet suggests Barbie Girl by Aqua and also Poupée de cire, poupée de son by France Gall (written by Gainsbourg for their Eurovision entry. Suitably French)

https://youtu.be/7cv9NIzGmSI

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

France Gall - Poupée de cire, poupée de son - Eurovision 1965 - Luxembourg - Winner

YouTube
@DJDarren @swisslet Denmark approves of your vote for Aqua 😁

@rvedotrc @swisslet Barbie Girl is no Dr Jones.

Largely because Barbie Girl isn't shit.

@DJDarren @rvedotrc my ignorance of Danish music is substantial. Lars Ulrich is Danish, right?

So… Master of Puppets by Metallica scratches both these conversational threads?

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@swisslet @rvedotrc I suspect the Danish would react to that in much the same way as Canada apologising for Brian Adams in the South Park movie.
@DJDarren @rvedotrc you can’t apologise enough for Lars Ulrich, to be fair.
@swisslet I've played France Gall before, and can't guarantee I won't again, because it's a masterpiece.
@DJDarren we’re getting to the point where repeats are going to be increasingly inevitable, aren’t we? You’re a victim of your own success. If you choose to be, as you make the rules and can play what you want.
@swisslet Oh aye, there's a few tracks I've played twice. I don't really mind, I just try to make sure I haven't played it for a good few months. Likewise, I try not to repeat an artiat from one week to the next. Unless it's in service of something I find funny, then all bets are off.
@DJDarren you do a grand job and I appreciate you (and Troggie too!).
@swisslet @DJDarren I want Ace of Spades to be played B2B with Barbie Girl, because both of those songs need to be on the list, and jarring dispositions is my favourite musical genre. (Good band name too!)

@DJDarren #ThePlaylistSuggestion

Wind Up Toy — Alice Cooper
Double Dutch — Malcom McLaren
He’s In The Jailhouse Now — Soggy Bottom Boys (Oh Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack)
United States of Whatever — Liam Lynch

@rvedotrc @DJDarren United States of Whatever makes me giggle every time. So daft.
@rvedotrc @DJDarren I've no idea what pinochle is or how you play it but it's a lovely word!
@rvedotrc @DJDarren i remember defiantly buying the single of United States of Whatever. My colleagues who worked at the same record shop, were all up in arms.
Whatever!

@DJDarren

Toy Soldiers -- Martika
Games Without Frontiers -- Peter Gabriel

Edit: I feel like I should be able to put Kate Bush on this list but I'm not currently braining

@DJDarren The Oldest Established Permanent Floating Crap Game - Frank Sinatra / Guys and Dolls soundtrack
Dare Truth Kiss Promise - The Pooh Sticks
Losing Game - La Santa Cecilia
It's All In The Game - The Four Tops
The Card Cheat - The Clash
The Right String But the Wrong Yo-Yo - Speckled Red

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren A question for the DJ: roughly how many song suggestions would you prefer to receive from each person? I try to give SOME choice so you're not stuck playing some absolute shite that I inexplicably think is brilliant, but I don't want to ALSO force you to listen to more shite than is reasonable.

Anyway, non-k-pop suggestions:

Metallica - Master of Puppets (before anyone else suggests it)
Silversun Pickups - Toy Soldiers (it's a cover of the Martika song, I like it better than the original)

Inevitable k-pop suggestion:

i-dle - Queencard (artist name may be listed as (G)I-DLE. incredibly silly and absolutely FLAWLESS. I came very close to ONLY suggesting this song)

My dad also sent me like seventeen suggestions then told me to listen to all of them and pick the least awful, which has certainly given me a new and acute appreciation for the work you do for us every week. So, from my dad:

Joe South - Games People Play

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@astronomerritt Three or four suggestions works fine for me. Gives me some scope.

I didn't know Papa Steph listened! If I'd known I'd have tried to be less shit!

@DJDarren He's been meaning to tune in to the live show for a while but he never remembers. He's probably a Late Kate For Life. But he really enjoys the concept even if some of the tunes baffle him.
@astronomerritt My dad is a perennially Delayed Wade as well. He listens in the car when he goes out for a drive, then texts me to tell me which songs he enjoyed.

@DJDarren

I'm a #DelayedWade or #LateKate every week, cos timezones, so most weeks I hear the second half live and then run through it all from the start in the car later in the day.

@astronomerritt

@astronomerritt @DJDarren Exactly the same reason I pick multiple songs, although in my case I'll sometimes pick songs on theme which I don't even love.

@DJDarren My #AusMusic #ThePlaylistSuggestion on the theme of theme "Toys and Games".

"Mondays Experts" - Weddings, Parties, Anything. A folk-rock song about everyone being an expert about the weekend's sporting games after the fact.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dB8PqnoLTic

"Computer Games" - Mi-Sex . Who doesn't love some 1980s synth rock?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-7VweoFu9w

"Holy Grail" - Hunters & Collectors. This song has become an Australian anthem about chasing sporting dreams. This video is in the Australian Rules football context.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QX7domu4dSo

"Leaps and Bounds" - Paul Kelly (Because it famously references "High on the hill, looking over the bridge, to the MCG") (*)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtzYqgiuSDo

"Bradman" - Paul Kelly. To long at 7 minutes, but a masterful story.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4etSJ-Hi_A

(*) Is there a compulsory Paul Kelly suggestion(s) I make for every theme?

The Fauves - Dragster For Christmas (live)

YouTube
@MrAndrewD @DJDarren speaking of cricket, can we have Jiggery Pokery again?
@DJDarren Oh no, Mi-Sex are New Zealanders, so I've fallen into the old trap of claiming NZ'ers as Aussies again!

@DJDarren As penance for selecting a Mi-Sex (*), an NZ band, another #AusMusic #ThePlaylistSuggestion is

Elephant - The Wiggles. Because The Wiggles "Big Red car" is the ultimate childhood singalong game, and the Wiggles covering Tame Impala is good fun.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a13WnqsRc5g

Just Ace - Grinspoon. 1990s guitar pop, and sub 2 mins too!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJ6dxZd0TTg

(* I was single digit years old when I heard this song, so I'm both impressed by my ability to remember it, and can understand why I didn't know they were Kiwis).

The Wiggles cover Tame Impala 'Elephant' for Like A Version

@MrAndrewD @DJDarren

Ooh, +1 for me on both Monday's Experts and Computer Games! 👍

@DJDarren nainainai by Atarashii Gakko. The main refrain means not here, not here, not here BOO. Japanese peek a boo.

Wicked Game by Chris Isaac.

Other Side of the Game by Erikah Badu.
#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@LuluHelle @DJDarren +1 for nainainai, Atarashii Gakko are brilliant
@astronomerritt @DJDarren fellow sibling in arms. Team AG!
The Clash - The Card Cheat (Official Audio)

Huggy Bear "Hopscotch"

@DJDarren
Mick Jagger - Strange Game

He wrote it for the Apple TV+ show Slow Horses because he's a fan of the books.

@roytoo @DJDarren OO the Slow Horses song. I likes that.
