And it's #MosaicMonday! I went to the Hillsdale Shopping Center in San Mateo, California today to make sure I got another chance to see the wonderful Benny Bufano sculptures before they tear the mall down as part of a planned redevelopment effort. (Tear-down date TBD)

I'd never noticed the mosaic pillars before.

@jeridansky Are you in San Francisco? He worked with the Ravenna Mosaic company of St Louis. I curated their corporate records in grad school. What I'm saying is I was surprised to see Bufano's name in my timeline. :)

@rjblaskiewicz And you got me scurrying to learn about his mosaic work, since I was just familiar with his sculptures!

I'm in Half Moon Bay, about an hour's drive south of San Francisco.

I'll be including his name more in the near future as I share photos of the sculptures in the mall.

@jeridansky I haven't been following that redevelopment plan much, but I go over to the recently developed area on the other side of the Caltrain station from time to time (OK, to the beer garden there, let me be specific).

@jeridansky Wow. Weird to think of the Hillsdale Mall going away ... We lived in the next town over for a few years back in ~2000 and used to go there all the time!

Hopefully someone will purchase the statues and give them a good home.

@amethyst73 Yeah, Hillsdale Mall was the main one I've used for the past 35 years or so β€” not that I went to any mall in the past five years. I love that it's human-sized, not full of big boxes. But big boxes are all the rage nowadays, it seems. And of course I love the statues.

I hope the statues find a good new home where the public can still visit them. One Bufano is outside, right near the Apple store, in the part of the shopping center that's been added just to the north of the covered mall. That part will stay as is, I believe.

Hillsdale dates back to 1954!

@jeridansky Wow, that's a long time!

Any idea what the space is going to be turned into?
