I am a few weeks in to "#Mastodon being my only social media".

It is, err, interesting.

I have zero local engagement in #Abergavenny on this - which I sort of miss.

I have zero family engagement on this - but we have group iMessage, so really makes no odds to that.

I have news, and some of the insanity of the world in my face, but less fake news I feel.

I have less stress, mostly, I think

I can "run out" of "scroll" while I have coffee in the morning, which is new!

The end of the scroll

Social media is fun, I understand, and to be honest it is one of those things I was slow to adopt, and then embraced. It is one of many thin...

@revk I'm actively glad for running out of scroll. I then have to actually look for some topic via a tag or go and find something else to do.

I am not glad for the social isolation but I have the advantage that I never did use facebook/twitter, so at least I'm used to it. At least some geeks I know are here :-)

@revk congratulations! It's a new online weird!
@revk
Thanks for sharing. Similar situation here. One or two #Wrexham and wider #Wales friends in here so far, so far but everyone else I know is spread around the world.
@MattMoose
Adrian is right. I don't miss the scroll but since I quit the usual social networks I miss out on all sorts of events that I didn't know about, even though I hang around the places you know.

There's definitely a culture of if it isn't on FB or IG then you're not finding out about it.
@revk
@revk
What's great is that there is no algorithm feeding you content. Chronological timeline.
@revk
I would like to dump my only other SM service (FB) but it represents more connections than I'm willing to lose as yet. 😢

@revk Congratulations for making it this far. I recommend reducing the "news" further (unfollow), it only makes you depressed - it certainly affects me.

Local community disconnect is a problem, but going back to FB/nextdoor etc is a bigger problem imho.

I wish there was a cleaner way for communities to interact than mainstream algorithmic "social" media.

@revk Ireland here and I do miss interacting with other Dubliners but it's refreshing!

@revk

Welcome! There are lots of very interesting people here. You are responsible for finding your folks.

What I do is when someone posts something interesting, I tap on their avatar image left of their screen name at the top of their post and look at their profile page. If they seem like interesting people, I follow them. If someone turns out to be not who you thought, you can unfollow them later. Follow lots of people starting out.

@revk not scrolling is great. muting and filtering works. you'll get there, and Abergavenny will follow!
@revk I'm luckily getting a reasonable amount of Tayside. I hope you find don't more locals
@revk finally I learnt where Abergavenny is. Cheers from Porta Westfalica! 🍻
