Also me: I finally ordered an M5 iPad Pro (even tho that means my M2 iPad Pro's Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil are now useless -- I can keep the Pencil for the lost iPad mini, I guess) that I get tomorrow and will probably be buying my husband a refurb M4 MBA and am also looking at getting another M4 Mac mini...

I'm the fucking worst.

@vnangia macOS Tahoe, a decade of regressions in UX, design, and general care, the way the whole Apple Care One fiasco thing happened and wound up costing me money. The fact that I can't have two separate iMessage accounts active on one device (each with its own separate eSIM) so I had to buy a whole second phone, the embarrassment of the latest Apple display updates. The way they are going to deprecate Rosetta2 for no fucking reason, the ass-kissing of government officials, the AI lies...

@vnangia like, there are more than that. But it really just comes down to the fact that even though Apple is better than any of the alternatives (but I don't think it's that much better anymore to convince people to switch full hog like they used to...the hardware still fucks, but the software is a total mess...better than the alternatives but for how long?) and the hardware I use today is better, the experience I have every day is worse in most cases than it was a decade ago.

@film_girl I am too. I've been trying to be kind to myself though. My need for the company's products no longer translates to liking the company. The leadership has disappointed me for a few years now with their choices.

@ppatel oh, 1000% and you make a good point. But for me, it's more of like "I'm dissatisfied with much of the experience that I get, yet it's still better than my alternatives so I'm stuck..." sort of thing.

@film_girl my iPad Air keyboard is the best keyboard I've ever had. Hardware version 0009, never forget. Thinking of not upgrading to the iPad here M4 just cause I'll have to get a new keyboard, and it couldn't possibly be as good. You have my sympathy🍸🐈

@film_girl It’s $309 for a battery replacement (which is actually a whole unit replacement) from Apple. Seems like a justification to me… 😉

@john sure — but I have Apple Care and they won’t replace the battery because they claim it’s not under 80% (it is) and won’t even let me pay for a battery replacement.

But if I could pay for the replacement, that would be a $200 difference between the M5 and the existing unit. So I might as well get the better screen, even if I have to buy a new pencil and put off buying a new keyboard until I miss it.

@film_girl If the battery isn’t under 80% it’s not “trashed” tho really is it? ... and once it is under 80% it’s a free replacement battery if you have AppleCare.

@john no, it’s 78% per the tools I can use to show battery cycles (and it lasts under 5 hours in any event) but Apple doesn’t accept that. And I bullied them into replacing it under AC+ once but the one they replaced it with went to the current status in less than a year. And I don’t use the iPad enough for it to have lost that many cycles. But I literally can’t use it for a full day, even just having it in sleep mode. It’ll be dead by the end of a day.

@stevenodb @john yeah, I’m sure I’ll still have complaints. And it absolutely was a decision to just go ahead and upgrade, but I also feel like since I’m having issues with it anyway, I might as well get $430 while I can. Maybe I can sell the Magic Keyboard on FB marketplace for $100. Who knows.

@john @stevenodb I really doubt I’d get $550 for a 3.5 year old iPad Pro tbh (and that would be what I’d need to get to justify the added friction vs just trading it in). $100 for the Magic Keyboard is going to be tough but at least it works with some 11” iPad Airs too.

@film_girl Replaced both my desktop and laptop last year by giving money to Apple, which left a bad taste in my mouth for many of the reasons you listed in the replies. My line is I have never and will (probably) never contribute to Apple’s recurring Services revenue.

@film_girl Sadly, many of us are angry at Apple, but if you stopped buying products from every shitty technology company right now, you couldn't ever update anything. They all suck in a myriad of ways 😣

You just have to do the best you can to represent your values and get through life.

I wish we didn't have to be angry with Apple. It feels worse than when we were just disappointed with some of their product decisions. They have held themselves to standards they now fail to meet, so 🤷‍♂️

@film_girl I also, despite my fury at Apple’s recent behavior, took a great trade in deal on an M5 Air.

Who knows what will happen with prices/design? So I just held my nose and did it.

Feeling similarly terrible, but computers are also still fun. Sad that the Trump garbage finally even got to this little remaining enjoyment.
