@redsad I realise it's not the point, but I never understood why the CEO deserved any respect just because he's a CEO.
Same applies to cops and soldiers.
Fuck those guys.

@NickSchwanck @redsad Actually I think that is the point. A janitor does lots of immediately useful things while having little power.

I have heard it said that a good indicator of someone's status within a work hierarchy is how long it takes before someone can be away before they are missed. For a janitor, hours at most.

BTW this dialogue is a classic. Saw it first during Trump I.

@martinvermeer @redsad I'm reminded of a scene from The Simpsons. I believe the town had gathered to discuss building a monorail. There was arguing and disagreement. Them somebody yelled; "Let's ask the richest, and therefore smartest, person in the room what HE thinks!".
@NickSchwanck @redsad And that would work if society were built in such a way that the wisest people, not the most cunning and ruthless ones, would float to the top. But here we are.
@martinvermeer @NickSchwanck @redsad There is an anecdote I think Graeber shared in the book Bullshit Jobs: A manager never took a single day off, not even on the most important Jewish holidays. When asked he said he has two fears: Without him nothing might work and it's total chaos, the other fear is everything is normal, no one even notices he's gone and he's therefore not really needed at all.
@NickSchwanck @redsad It's actually quite easy: the CEO can fire you, cops and soldiers have weapons and will get away with using them against you. Disrespect them and you regret it for the rest of your life which might not be long.
@floS @redsad Just because those people can do those things, I don't respect them. Doesn't mean I won't be polite.
Firing me or killing me for non-compliance doesn't engender respect. They engender fear.
They're not the same.

@NickSchwanck @redsad respect is earned
when I never talk to or interact with that person I will be very neutral towards them.

No, you do not earn respect by being in a priviledged position. That's neurotypical behaviour and pretty cringe

@redsad as a janitor I approve this message 🤣
