i really would like proper screensavers back. we can see in certain edge cases that burn-in is still a problem with TFTs (and i guess OLEDs), it's just not widely known anymore

@mntmn they are coming back https://www.jwz.org/blog/2025/07/xscreensaver-6-12/

but screen blank helps with the burn in problem already a good bit and some OLEDs seem to come with a screenblank feature in firmware it seems

XScreenSaver 6.12

XScreenSaver 6.12 is out now. This is another Unix-only release. DPMS works on Wayland, using either "wlr-output-power-management-unstable-v1" or "kde-dpms". Fading should perform much better on both Wayland and X11. GNOME continues to be unsupported. Oh dear. How sad. Nevermind. Still no locking. What I would like to know: Do you have a non-GNOME Wayland system on which either idle detection

@TheOneDoc oh wow i totally missed that jwz gave wayland another chance?!

@mntmn I missed it as well and, of all people a @BrodieOnLinux video clued me in on that.
Ever since I watched @till on Tech over Tea youtube insists on recommending Brodies videos and sometimes even I can't resist the drama click bait.

Edit: it's only fair to link to the video.

@TheOneDoc @mntmn @BrodieOnLinux

Sorry for making you getting spammed by YouTube. I hope you enjoyed at least the Tech over Tea ep. #299 with me about OpenPrinting ...

Brodie, by the way, great thumbnail image. Reminds me to my Windows 95 PC (ugly!!) times in the early 90s ... The Flying Toasters screen saver!

To protect the particle accelerators (CRT monitors) everybody had on their desks ...

And now they come back for OLED monitors?

@till @mntmn @BrodieOnLinux it's only spam if it's utterly useless so no worries.

@TheOneDoc @mntmn @BrodieOnLinux

And in no way I want to say that Brodie's videos are useless (sorry, Brodie, if some of the comments here made that impression).

Many subject matters are important to be made aware of. And in case that one of the videos you did not like so much, in the end you always learn how to free up some storage space ...
