Those (Elves) who refused to repent and /or leave Middle Earth were then rendered unable to understand each other's language and to be seen as unslightly by the remaining Elves and Men. As part of the Curse, the Last Dwarves would still recognise their Eleven heritage and shun or slay them due to prior feuds and emnities. Edit: Note the Tower of Babel reference.
