There was a bagpipe band competition happening at the park the local farmer's market is held in, and it was incredible! I have never in my life seen so many bagpipers together, playing perfectly in tune! That was so cool. Bagpipes won me over today. #ProfSamLectureTour

@sundogplanets *Good* pipers make a hell of a difference. I grew up in a house whose lot was *right* up against the local high school where they had a really good competitive pipe band going back forever.

I don't think I ever adopted the distaste so many people have for them specifically because of that experience being so positive.

@sundogplanets When I lived in Boston's West Fenway and had a double plot in the Fenway Victory Garden (a long time ago), there was a guy who lived in the East Fenway who would practice his bagpipes on the bank of the Muddy River across from the gardens. It was wonderful. He played professionally at weddings, funerals and other special events.

@sundogplanets I used to run in a park where a guy sometimes practiced bagpipes. From anywhere in the park I could hear him playing and it was glorious.

@sundogplanets I was once at a party where there was a piper (we went to school together). He was playing in the back yard and two girls came running round the house. One saying excitedly to the other "I TOLD YOU there was a bag piper!"

He was also the lone piper who played Last Post when the Edinborough Tatto was held in Wellington.
