@softmaus @kubikpixel I’m not sure what people expect Proton to do. It appears, according to the 404 article, that they didn’t”help” but were legally compelled to hand over payment data. Proton is not, in any way, an anonymous service if you’re paying with a CC. I have a lot of issues with Proton but this isn’t one of them. It remains one of the best alternatives to Gmail/Hotmail/YahooMail.
@kubikpixel Proton offers free accounts that can be used anonymously without leaving a trace. A free Proton account used in combination with a no-log VPN should provide sufficient anonymity. If you use a payment method, the service is obliged to keep the data for its own auditing. And when there's data, the service is obliged to hand it to law enforcement. Proton does support payment with cryptocurrencies for increased anonymity. Users should inform themselves about these options.
