I have been thinking all day about the Americans attacking and sinking a ship that was unarmed as it was attending a diplomatic ceremonial event. These are barbarians, and the sooner we sever ties the better. #auspol

@andyjennings

This one ...?

"An unarmed Iranian ship was invited, along with the U.S., to be part of an Indian Naval exercise, and its sailors paraded on land before the president.
The U.S. at the last minute pulled out of the exercise and instead attacked the Iranian ship with a torpedo.
Breaking with all norms of civilization and warfare, we then refused to rescue the drowning survivors. The Sri Lanka Navy was left to pull the dead bodies from the water.
I am hard pressed to think of any other nation throughout history that would do something so cowardly and despicable. We are genuinely in a league of our own, and American media — mostly shrugging off the bombing of a girls school and acting as if carpet bombing Tehran is a normal military tactic — is deeply complicit.

@MyView yes. Exactly.

@andyjennings

Sounds like a form of solicitation to me ... and as far as I know, that too is illegal ... but whether out of US waters or on US land, it's just another case of "meh we can do anything to anybody anywhere ..."

@MyView @andyjennings I am starting to hope that Iran destroys as much US military capacity as possible.

We need the USA to not have the global military power that it has had previously.

@UlrikNyman @MyView @andyjennings agree, but there's no way Iran will inflict any deterrence whatsoever on US/Israel war mongering. The only way to start the long journey towards a free and peaceful world, is to stop contributing resources to the war machine. Europeans need to dump US ties and negotiate diplomatic solutions, ending NATO without resorting to stockpiling more weapons as a means to counter US power.

We build more roads, we get more cars. We make more weapons, we get more wars.

@benjaoming @UlrikNyman @andyjennings

The USA's weapons industry is what gave the US the money, and power, it has has since WW2 ...

Fact is, the US GDP grew from $88.6 billion in 1939 to $228 billion in 1945 to nearly $1.7 trillion by 1975 ...

And their Reds Under The Bed propaganda has ensured a steady supply all over the world since ...
And as other countries saw it, started their own weapons industry ... weapons are big business.

@MyView @andyjennings I was deeply disappointed by the fact that ABC news reports I listened to this morning studiously avoided any mention of the facts that the vessel was unarmed, and why it was off the coast of Sri Lanka... I had hoped for better reporting from "Aunty"

@PhilWill @andyjennings

Sorry but your hope is in vain ... Auntie is in palliative care and the thing keeping her alive is the public purse ...

Iranian warship was sailing home from India exhibition when U.S. sank it

The sinking underscored the scope of the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran and its spread in the Middle East and beyond. It also ignited a debate in India about maritime security in the Indian Ocean.

PBS News

@morgan @andyjennings

Thanks ... didn't think it was just one man's opinion but the US' PBS proving proof of its country's duplicity is worthwhile ...

@andyjennings And it's like nobody cares. But then I remember that nobody cares about two years of genocide in #Gaza and I get it. They don't care.
@andyjennings Bit like hitting a passenger plane in the 80s "accidentally" but never apologising, and giving a medal to the guy in charge. 🤷🏽
@andyjennings let's hope one day they're held accountable for their war crimes

@andyjennings India issued a statement about how they had invited Iran to this peacetime event, and that was the only reason they were there off Sri Lanka, and America bombed them without mercy or warning and did not even pick up survivors.

My brother started telling me about how the Iranian govt has said that the Iranian women's soccer team could face the death penalty for not singing the anthem, and could I believe such a barbaric thing. So I told him what Trump and the Americans did to those poor people in the frigate who were there on good faith - and he just said 'oh'.

@andyjennings totally agree and though the same after Venezuela

@andyjennings

It's damning how few politicians have a straight moral compass.

@andyjennings same as when CIA gave Thatcher the coordinates to the Argentine General Belgrano Light Cruiser(1938 build) training ship in International waters, which was sunk by english nuclear sub in Falklands War 1982 in retaliation for their losses. The memorial in Rosario says hundreds of young cadets were onboard. Sadly rich bullies usually win and history is written by the victors. What a shameful world we live in.
@andyjennings well, sure. There's also the issue of knowingly bombing a primary school filled with children

Al Jazeera investigation: Iran girls’ school targeting likely ‘deliberate’

Al Jazeera investigation raises questions over deadliest single attack of war that killed 165 schoolgirls and staff.

Al Jazeera
@andyjennings The claim it was unarmed is unsubstantiated & inconsistent with there having been gunfire exercises in MILAN-2024 & comes from one retired diplomat only, in every case I have seen.
The ship was 1400km from the Port the exercises were based in & was past Sri Lanka & headed for the Arabian sea, carrying four 300km range anti ship missiles & six light anti submarine torpedoes

@andyjennings

Most likely a war crime.
